Solaris 8 1/01 (UD3)
Mailer - Attachment - Add dialog box can now be kept open to add two or more files to an e-mail. This eliminates the need to select Add Files from the Attachment menu several times.
Enhancement to the algorithm that controls virtual/physical pages and how they are cached delivers increased system performance by approximately 10 percent for general user loads in servers. The most benefit is realized when machines are heavily loaded.
Alternate Pathing software for Sun Enterprise Servers has been updated and is included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
Diskless Client Management is available through the Solaris Management Console command line. Manage diskless clients, list OS services for diskless clients, and manage patches on all existing diskless clients. Supports Solaris 8 software (SPARC and Intel Platform Editions), as well as SPARC processor-based clients running Solaris 2.6 or later versions.
DISM has the same characteristics as ISM: shared page tables, large page support, and pinned pages. In addition, pages could be unpinned to release memory for other applications, and new pages could be pinned to increase the size of the shared memory segment. This feature significantly improves Oracle database performance.
Improved DR error messages are intended to help system administrators troubleshoot problems when system resources, such as configured swap areas or dedicated dump devices, are removed.
Solaris software recovery patch for e-cache parity errors includes kernel cache scrubber, improved diagnostic error messages, delayed panic on write-back error (until a subsequent access), fast reboot, and graceful reboot.
Improved with bug fixes.
Improved with bug fixes.
LDAP is now supported in the iPlanet Web Server directory server. To set up the iPlanet directory server to support Solaris clients (SPARC Platform Edition), see the "LDAP Setup and Configuration Guide."
  • Symbolic information available from dladdr(3DL) is enhanced with the introduction of dladdr1().
  • &ORIGIN of a dynamic object can be obtained from dlinfo(3DL).
  • Maintenance of runtime configuration files, created with crle(1), is simplified with the display of command-line options that create the configuration file. Update capability is also available (see the -u option).
  • Runtime linker and its debugger interface are extended to detect procedure-linkage-table entry resolution. This update is identified by a new version number. (See the section, "Agent Manipulation.") This update extends the rd_plt_info_t structure. (See the section, "Procedure Linkage Table Skipping.")
  • Applications stack can be defined non-executable by using the new mapfile segment descriptor STACK. (See the section, "Segment Declarations.")
RBAC databases can now be managed through the Solaris Management Console graphical interface. Rights can contain other rights and may be assigned by default in the policy.conf file."
The mkfs command is updated to improve performance when file systems are created. Improved mkfs performance is often ten times faster than in previous Solaris releases. Performance improvements are seen when both large and small file systems are created. However, the greatest mkfs performance improvements occur on systems with high-capacity or high-speed disks.
For the SPARC platform, the Guide is updated with bug fixes 4308968, 4356675, 4356690.
Integrates latest version of Netscape browser. Beginning with 4.75, Netscape Communicator is not subject to CERT Advisory CA-2000-15 (Brown Orifice Vulnerability).
Provides generic APIs for system software to register interest in device-related events. This is an enhancement to the DR infrastructure to better manage, coordinate, and respond to resource reconfiguration.
First release to support smart cards.
Administrators are now able to easily manage Solaris systems through a series of WBEM compliant management tools: User Manager, Log Viewer, Serial Port Manager, Process Manager, File Manager, Disk Manager, Job Scheduler, and Diskless Client Support CLI.
Solaris Management Console 2.0 is a GUI-based, "umbrella application" that serves as the launching point for a variety of management tools. It comes complete with a default toolbox containing:
  • Processes - Suspend, resume, monitor, and control processes.
  • Users - Set up and maintain user accounts, user templates, groups, mailing lists, administrative roles, and rights. Grant or deny rights to users and administrative roles to control the specific applications each can work with, and which tasks each user can perform.
  • Scheduled Jobs - Schedule, start, and manage jobs. -Mounts and Shares - View and manage mounts, shares, and usage information.
  • Disks - Create and view disk partitions.
  • Serial Ports - Configure and manage existing serial ports.
  • Log Viewer - View application and command-line messages and manage log files.
  • Toolbox Editor - Add or delete tools from the default toolbox, or create a new toolbox to manage a different set of tools.
Solaris Print Manager updated. For more information see "USB Printer Support" in the "Solaris 8 System Administration Supplement."
New features:
  • Ability to uninstall individual system packages.
  • All Solaris system products installed in localized versions appear in the System Software Localizations folder.
  • Registry is compatible with more installation wizards.
For the SPARC platform, adds information on setting up internal card readers. Step-by-step instructions for setting up smart card support are streamlined to make this process easier.
The Solaris Tunable Parameters Reference Manual has been updated with additional information on the semsys:seminfo_semmnu parameter.
Updates include:
  • Updated description of init.wbem command, which now starts the Solaris Management Console server as well as the CIM Object Manager.
  • Added section describes how to upgrade the CIM Object Manager repository.
  • Updated Security chapter refers the user to Solaris Management Console for implementing RBAC
  • wbemlogviewer application replaced with Solaris Management Console Log Viewer for viewing log file information.
  • Adds description of new Solaris_Network1.0.mof file and Solaris_Users1.0.mof file.
Solaris Web Start 3.0 installation method is updated to allow modification of the selected Solaris Software Group by adding or removing software packages.
The updated Sun Validation Test Suite (SunVTS) is included with "SPARC Platform Edition for Sun Computer Systems."
SunForum, a data conferencing product based on the T.120 standard, has been updated. With SunForum, a system can conference over intranets and the Internet with other T.120 products, such as Microsoft NetMeeting and PictureTel LiveShare Plus, version 4.0.
During system identification, system identification utilities can configure systems to be LDAP clients. Prior Solaris releases allowed machines to be configured only as NIS, NIS+, or DNS clients.
As an enhancement of Complex Text Layout technology for Hebrew, Arabic, and Thai, delivers an utility to distinguish character sequence and provides new and enhanced text boundary resolution (like a wrapper) for users in Thailand. The Thai text boundary resolution module is a new framework. Thai locale now supports correct word-boundary handling of Motif widgets. CDE applications and Motif library perform proper locale-specific, text boundary resolution in all locales. The feature, especially changes to CDE/Motif library, will be delivered to library version 4 (libXm.so.4).
CDE datatypes database provides definitions for datatypes and actions recognized by CDE clients. The Types Editor allows users to view, edit, or create datatypes to retype files temporarily or permanently.
Improved UFS functionality: The performance of direct I/O, which is used by database applications to access unbuffered file-system data, is improved by allowing concurrent read and write access to regular UFS files. For use by database customers.
New fssnap command for backing up a file system while it is mounted. A snapshot is a temporary image of a file system, intended for backup operations. Previously, when using the ufsdump command, the documentation recommended the use of single-user mode to keep the file system inactive during a backup.
Provides window manager communication API to write graphical workspace manager and application GUI list.
