User Stories - Why I Love Solaris ContestHere are real stories sent by real users of the Solaris 10 Operating System. Solaris Volume ManagerThe bundled software saved me a bundle! I took one look at Solaris Volume Manager and sent my Veritas Volume Manager packing!
Solaris 10 SimplicityDuring my last year in College, we were given a chance to work with three computers at our Java Research and Development Center. Our group grabbed the opportunity not knowing the complexity it took to install Linux on SPARC machines. I botched the first try of installing gentoo in one machine and was aching to find an easier solution that would allow me to be able to code in Java. I remembered shortly after that Solaris 10 was available. After I finished downloading Solaris 10, I was able to install it into the three SPARC machines with much ease. That's why I love Solaris 10 - knowing the complexity it took to install Linux in the SPARC machines and the ease I encountered with Solaris 10. DTrace FunctionalityI am a long time Solaris user and Solaris 10 is the best release ever. The features of Solaris 10 are miles ahead of any of the competition. I use both the SPARC and Intel versions of Solaris 10 and its nice to be able to utilize my expertise on both platforms. DTrace is the best tool for tracking down system bottlenecks and containers are a great way of testing new implementations without sacrificing the stability of my system. Solaris 10 ContainersSolaris 10 Containers are a great tool for server consolidation. For years, we've had several vendor supplied applications, which required a dedicated server on which to run due to the way the applications consumed resources. Now we're consolidating these applications onto shared larger boxes, using containers. Containers allows us to isolate each application into its own protected environment, without using expensive domainable hardware. This saves us administrative overhead and costs. The Best Developer PlatformSolaris 10 is the best developing platform for one simple reason - it's the most stable and reliable platform I had ever developed on! Once compiled, it runs nice and smooth since it is based on UNIX, not similar to it, but all the way better from Loader to Kernel. In conclusion, Solaris 10 is instant gratification for developers. Thanks! In Search of the Best OSI'm in the field of Oracle Development and I was searching for best OS for hosting Oracle databases and my choices were Windows, Linux or Solaris. After reviewing them on the basis of performance, scalability and ease of use, I selected Solaris 10 and I am very happy with it as it has tremendous improvements over previous versions. Solaris Management Console, the Java Desktop System, Sun Update Manager, StarOffice and Mozilla are my favorites. I think we all should replace Windows with Solaris. Solaris Containers and DTrace BoomSolaris Containers were a boom for my company. We were able to retire 4 servers and consolidate onto one. DTrace improved our performance with it's intuitive process tracing. When we moved our applications to Solaris 10, we encountered not one problem. A Company's New StrategyAfter being badgered on our companies Linux strategy for some time, I evaluated several commercial Linux's and Sun's Solaris 10 on x86. Solaris 10 installed on every system that we tried Linux on and beat every benchmark as well. Commercial Linux is not free, Solaris on x86 is. I need to provide an auditable computing environment, support from Google vs. support from Sun - Sun wins every time. I am recommending that my departments new Linux strategy is Solaris 10 on x86. Security on a BudgetSolaris 10 offers complete integration, making it compatible to do business internationally while being very secure. The considerable advances in its growth and inception as well as its ability to transfer information to the consumer in a plausible way is outstanding. Solaris 10 is definitely a leader in its field. Who else can offer as much without breaking a business financially? Confidence in Data SecurityHi. We converted from Red Hat Linux and have been running Solaris 10 and can't believe how amazingly fast the system is. We run Java applications and Tomcat on Linux systems and can never get the performance that Solaris is able to deliver. WOW!! But the real story for us is Solaris Containers. We are an ASP, Web hosting and e-commerce solutions company. Our Sun machines are running Apache, mySQL, PHP, and Tomcat serving JSP content to various clients. For example, one of our clients hosts a large apartment network search site for accommodations in the city of Halifax. Other clients are logged into different Solaris Containers to run their accounting system. Solaris Containers made it possible for us to run more than one copy of Tomcat and more than one Apache server listening on the same port. The security feature of having all of our clients in separate Solaris Containers makes our clients feel safe about their data. Solaris 10 makes us very happy, and our customers are pleased with our service offerings compared to any other hosting company out there. Thank you Sun for making an incredible operating system and the Solaris Containers! We have never seen or worked with any beta operating system that is rock solid and stable enough to place into a production environment to really see its reliability and security features. We are very pleased and look forward to implementing Solaris on a larger scale soon. Margaret Flunkert Solaris just keeps getting better and betterI work in the IT services group within a large company managing over 300 systems. The infrastructure makeup is largely SPARC and x86/AMD boxes running various versions of Solaris and Windows server software. We run everything from company financial systems to development compiler boxes. Having used Solaris since 2.4, the greatest thing I have found about Solaris is its constant improvement. Features are always being added, additional FREE software is always being bundled, and support is second to none. I have seen this OS through the worst of problems to find nothing but constantly driven improvement. Solaris has enabled me to bring an unsupportable computer room into a reliable, accessible, and serviceable data center by using proactive patch management based on Sun Enterprise Installation Services standards. Solaris with Samba has permitted us to share storage between windows servers and improve file system interoperability. We don't have to reboot Solaris to resolve service issues like many services in Windows; we just stop and restart the service in seconds. There are no platforms even close to providing the blade/dynamic reconfiguration abilities like Solaris on 15Ks to support increasing capacity on demand or even maintaining mission-critical domains during a hardware failure. We are eagerly awaiting Solaris 10 because with Solaris Containers and the ability to use DTrace for troubleshooting application issues, we will be able to better isolate system workloads and aid application developers in software debugging and repair of their applications. Solaris 10 will also permit us to further consolidate systems as we move towards a grid and utility operating model over the next five years. And with unmatched professional development, I look forward to using Solaris 10 with JDS 3 on my own laptop using Solaris 10 with JDS 3 as my windows replacement for work and home use. Ronald DeMena 99.99 percent UptimeMy team is responsible for running some of the most visited Web and WAP sites for a large multinational telecommunications company in our small corner of the world (New Zealand). The Web site handles well over a million hits per week, and the WAP site handles more than 750,000 hits per week. We use BEA, Sun’s enterprise, and Apache Web software with Oracle on the back end. I love Solaris—especially when combined with the Sun enterprise product suite—for its stability, security, and ease of deployment. Our main Web site has had a 99.99 percent uptime over the past three months, thanks to Solaris being rock solid! Solaris also allows us to easily support large, temporary increases in traffic, such as during marketing promotions. Excellent Solaris package management, inclusion of features such as IPsec, and excellent all around technical support when required have allowed us to use Solaris as a secure base on which to build often complex online applications. Excellent documentation and Sun training programs have allowed us to get new-to-Solaris systems administrators on stream and providing support quickly and efficiently. I don’t think you’ll be surprised to hear that I always specify Sun products when working on a new project. Dan Richardson |
