Yes, after purchasing a Solaris 8 retirement subscription.
Q: What options do I have for Solaris 8 licenses?
A:
The Solaris 8 Retirement subscription is the only current option and provides a one year Right-To-Use license and a one year premium Solaris 8 support plan included along with the license. These can be renewed annually as needed.
Q: Do all currently shipping Sun systems support the Solaris 8 OS?
A:
No. Examples of systems that require a later version of the Solaris OS include all systems based on the AMD Opteron processor, all systems based on the UltraSPARC T1 processor, and all system based on the UltraSPARC IV+ processor. In addition, systems featuring the PCI Express peripheral interconnect require a later version of the Solaris OS. Please check the appropriate documentation for each system to see which releases are supported.

The Solaris 10 upgrade service offered by Sun's Infrastructure Integration Services can help customers quickly and cost-effectively deploy the Solaris 10 OS on an existing SPARC and/or x86 based platform running a previous Solaris release such as Solaris 7, 8, or 9. The service will be delivered by Sun or authorized Sun partner expert staff trained in the Solaris 10 OS. See the online description of Sun's upgrade offerings for details. Q: What's the advantage of the Solaris 8 retirement subscriptions?
A:
The one year subscription provides an option to customers that need to run Solaris 8 for a limited time before they can upgrade to a later version of Solaris. It also provides both the Solaris 8 license and support in a single transaction.
Q: When do I need to purchase a Solaris 8 license?
A:
After 6/30/09, a Solaris 8 retirement subscription has to be purchased prior to installing Solaris 8 on a new server or on a server being re-purposed to run Solaris 8. One subscription is required per server.
Q: Can I purchase a server with Solaris 8 installed on it from Sun?
A:
No. Sun no longer ships servers with Solaris 8 installed on it.
Q: Can I purchase a Sun Spectrum System Service Plan or a Solaris Subscription Service Plan for a server on which I will run Solaris 8?
A:
Yes. That option continues to be available via the Sun System Service plans or Solaris support plans if you already have the perpetual Solaris 8 license for the system you are running this OS on. A Solaris 8 retirement subscription is available if you need the license to run Solaris 8 on the system you need coverage for. Solaris 8 OS support is included in the retirement subscription. Please note, Solaris licenses are not transferable between systems.
Q: Do the Solaris 8 retirement subscriptions also cover Trusted Solaris 8?
A:
No. The Solaris 8 retirement parts do not cover Trusted Solaris 8. Trusted Solaris 8 must be purchased separately as before.
