WBEM is the Web-Based Enterprise Management initiative to standardize management information across platforms. This standard is being driven by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) to define a Common Information Model (CIM) -- a consistent vendor- and platform- independent method for defining management information about objects (e.g., disk drives, printers, applications, operating systems) in any system. This management information will in turn be made available to management applications via the new open communication standard eXtensible Markup Language (XML) over the common Web protocol HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP). On June 8, 1999, Sun announced Solaris™ WBEM Services and the Sun™ WBEM Software Development Kit (SDK), the company's implementation of the emerging WBEM standards for the Solaris™ Operating Environment. Solaris WBEM Services software and the associated developer toolkit enable IT developers and managers to create and modify system information stored in the standard CIM format. The software eases the administration of the Solaris Operating Environment, and provides management software interoperability. With the release of Solaris™ Easy Access Server 3.0, Sun announces WBEM support for Solaris Easy Access Server software, as well as its plans to release an update to both Solaris WBEM Services and Sun WBEM SDK in the August/September 1999 timeframe. This update will include additional support for the XML protocol along with the current native Java RMI (Remote Method Invocation) interfaces and the latest release of the Java development environment, Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition. Both Solaris WBEM Services and Sun WBEM SDK will be available as early access -- for customers of the Solaris 7 and 2.6 Operating Environments -- from the Sun Web site as downloadable modules. The XML enhancements in the runtime and development environment coincide with the progress made during the recent final review and interoperability testing of the DMTF XML/CIM specifications. In addition, support for the Java 2 development environment will extend Sun's WBEM implementation features to include native Java 2 security interfaces, and take advantage of the outstanding performance -- as well as other enhancements -- in the latest Java release. If you're interested in registering for advanced notice of this and other Solaris WBEM Services updates, send us e-mail now. And remember to check back at this site for updates to Solaris WBEM Services software.
