Solstice PC-CacheFS
Significant improvements in network performance are available with caching. Solstice Network Client 3.2 enables frequently accessed network or CD-ROM files to be transparently copied onto local drives to reduce server load and improve performance. Sun's technology to accomplish this is called PC-CacheFS.

With Solstice PC-CacheFS software, frequently accessed files are copied to the user's local hard drive -- but only the portion being used is actually copied. All future references to this portion of the file are quickly accessed from the local drive, which frees up the network to other users.
Among the impressive features of the Solstice PC-CacheFS component are:
- Easy installation
- Complete transparency for the user
- Non-volatile cache
- Larger than memory-based caches
- Network independence -- Solstice PC-CacheFS works with any network that supports Microsoft Windows 3.x and networks that are compliant with Windows 95 Installable File System (IFS)

TCP/IP Security
Solstice Network Client 3.2 software offers a Windows 95 security component to address a major concern of customers who deploy widely connected networks and access the Internet. Solstice PC-SKIP software is a Microsoft Windows implementation of the emerging SKIP (Simple Key-management for Internet Protocols) standard. It provides data encryption and authentication of the IP traffic stream. Once installed, end-user devices such as remote clients, workstations, and servers can securely conduct business over the Internet and corporate intranets.
Besides enabling point-to-point communication, Solstice PC-SKIP also permits remote or mobile employees and customers to securely communicate with protected corporate sites when used with any of Sun's SunScreen firewall products.
Solstice PC-SKIP software provides security transparently to users and enables secure communication without requiring knowledge of SKIP or modifications to existing applications.
Solstice PC-SKIP supports:
- IPv4 addressing
- Automatic certificate discovery, allowing SKIP hosts to exchange public-key certificates without the need for manual intervention or floppy swapping
- Encryption algorithm discovery
- Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS) providing security for past network traffic, even if long-term keys are stolen or compromised
The SKIP rapid in-line update of the keys used for traffic encryption provides one of the highest levels of security currently available for implementation on end systems devices. SKIP changes the encryption keys every 30 seconds or 500 Kbytes by default to minimize the amount of network data encrypted with a single key. This feature significantly reduces the amount of data sacrificed if an unauthorized party gains access to one of the keys.
Additionally, SKIP in-line key updates work even over unidirectional links, such as IP delivered by satellite or cable broadcast. SKIP encryption may coexist with the other popular application encryption schemes such as PGP, PEM, and SSL.
