A Complete OSI Communication Platform

Solstice OSI 9.0 provides a complete communication platform, connecting Solaris systems to all other OSI systems as well as providing access to OSI networks worldwide.

Solstice OSI provides STREAMS-based OSI software which runs on the Solaris Operating Environment.

Benefits
  • For end users: Solstice OSI provides a communication platform for running all of the applications in the Solstice OSI release (X.400, FTAM, CMIP, VT) as well as third-party or custom applications developed using industry-standard APIs.

  • For system administrators: Solstice OSI offers an easy-to-use graphical interface designed to simplify the task of configuring and administering OSI networks.

  • For application developers: Solstice OSI offers a comprehensive set of industry-standard APIs over the transport and ACSE/presentation layers.

New Features
  • Solstice OSI 9.0 is supported on Solaris 8 SPARC system in 64-bit mode.

OSI Communication Platform
The Solstice OSI Communication Platform enables Sun systems to communicate with other systems running Solstice OSI or other implementations of the OSI protocols. It implements a complete set of OSI protocols and supports concurrent connections to X.25, TCP/IP, and local area networks such as Ethernet and FDDI.

Solstice OSI supports OSI routing facilities through the ES-IS (End System to Intermediate System) routing exchange protocol. This enables Sun systems to act as either end systems or intermediate systems as defined by ISO 9542.

An implementation of RFC 1006 (Session over TCP) permits users to employ OSI applications that run over both TCP/IP and OSI transport protocols.

Applications

The following OSI applications can be purchased as part of the OSI "end-user" environment. They run concurrently on the Solstice OSI Communication Platform:

Developing Custom Applications

Solstice OSI provides the following industry-standard programming interfaces:

  • TLI (Transport Layer Interface)
  • APLI (ACSE/Presentation Library Interface)

These interfaces can be used to develop custom applications that run concurrently with the applications in Solstice OSI.

Configuration and Administration

Solstice OSI includes an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) for configuration and administration. It features:

  • Stack Manager
  • ES-IS Configuration
  • Network Layer Addressing
  • Routing Manager

Protocol Information

The Solstice OSI Communication Platform is a full implementation of the following OSI and related standards:

  • ISO 8649/50 - ACSE
  • ISO 9072-1/2 - ROSE
  • ISO 8822/3/4/5 - Presentation
  • ISO 8326/7 - Session
  • ISO 8073/4 - Transport
  • ISO 8348 - Network Services
  • ISO 8648 - Network Layer Org.
  • ISO 8878 - Use of X.25 (CONS)
  • ISO 8473 - CLNP
  • ISO 9542 - ES-IS
  • ISO 8602 - CLTS
  • ISO 8802-2 - LLC sublayer
  • RFC1006 - Session over TCP/IP

Conformance to international profiles:

  • US GOSIP version 2
  • UK GOSIP version 4
  • OSTC

Licensing
  • Solstice OSI incorporates a floating license system. The number of Right-To-Use licenses defines the number of machines on which the software can run concurrently.
