What's new in Solstice Enterprise Manager 5.1
The latest version includes enhanced performance through distribution of core MIS processes; support for the Solaris 10 OS; new Meta Data Interface (MDR) API support; scalable MIS-to-MIS connections; and a 3rd- Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)- compliant gateway.

Enhanced performance
The core MIS processes in the Solstice Enterprise Manager software are now distributed into three distinct parts: MDR Processes, Local Object Data Type (ODT) Processes, and Management Information Server (MIS) Processes. This allows for improved performance and MIS process troubleshooting.

Support for Solaris 10
Solstice Enterprise Manager 5.1 supports the Solaris 10 OS. Customers can now take advantage of features provided by the most sophisticated operating system Sun has ever produced.

New Metadata Repository (MDR) API support
Solstice Enterprise Manager now supports a new and more feature-rich MDR API. Customers enjoy more freedom and flexibility when integrating MDR applications.

Scalable MIS to MIS connections
Solstice Enterprise Manager now supports scalable MIS-to-MIS connections in management networks. This allows nearly unlimited scalability in telecom networks, as MIS instances can "pyramid" in a hierarchical fashion.

3GPP Compliant Gateway
Solstice Enterprise Manager 5.1 supports the 3GPP protocol through a get access gateway, so customers can now utilize this open, standards- based protocol to manage their network infrastructures.

Massive scalability, performance, and capacity
By segmenting the overall network management foundation into intelligent components, Solstice Enterprise Manager can scale to meet the needs of massive networks, managing millions of devices. Network overhead is reduced and operator productivity is increased when network components perform their functions independently.

Specific enhancements include increases in the number of:
  • Events per second
  • Log records
  • Topology nodes
  • Simultaneous client application connections
  • Alarm records processed

Superior management functionality
With an award-winning pedigree and a proven installed base of leading telecommunication companies worldwide, the mission-critical Solstice Enterprise Manager application continues to be enhanced:
  • Improved discovery of elements: Streamlined processes are faster, easier to use, and more accurate. These include a selfadapting ping algorithm, automated device configuration, and new default settings that find more devices under a wider range of network conditions.
  • Management Information Loader: Simple "one button" execution hides the complexities of loading management data definitions. A graphical user interface helps users load, compile, and prepare data definitions for use.
  • CMIP overload control: An overload condition mechanism emits a notification when preconfigured thresholds are reached.
  • New alarms: These include options for more granular alarm filtering, including additional fields and sorting capabilities.
  • Basic requests: These enable event request creation based on thresholds. This application is integrated into the network views window as the default request system.
  • Data collection: The setup of data collection is simplified through integration with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/ CMIP data viewing windows. Browsing of collected data is now available from the data collections window.
  • Documentation: A search engine is provided for easy access to the appropriate on-line documentation
  • Network views: These enable administrators to store display information such as default zoom, icon, and icon label sizes individually for each view.

Distributed architecture
Sun is acknowledged as a leading provider of highly available hardware platforms and highly reliable operating systems for the telecommunication and service provider industry. The Solstice Enterprise Manager product is an advanced, distributed, object-oriented foundation that consists of three main components: Fault Management Applications, Management Information Server (MIS), and Management Protocol Adapter (MPA). These encompass Sun's latest technology for managing servicedriven networks.

Multiple copies of each component can be deployed on a range of low-cost servers and clients anywhere in a network. Together, these components provide a seamless, integrated infrastructure for efficient, distributed telecommunication network and network element management.

The flexibility of the Solstice Enterprise Manager advanced distributed architecture provides telecommunication organizations with incomparable management scalability beyond the limitations imposed by a traditional centralized solution. The Solstice Enterprise Manager software offers unparalleled expansion capability that can dynamically adjust to your network needs—providing ongoing support of legacy services, while incorporating new technologies such as the Java platform and CORBA.

Management information servers
Central to the Solstice Enterprise Manager architecture is the management information service (MIS). This contains a distributed repository of management information and management functions that are used to successfully manage the network and network elements. Management information for any network or network element can be held in a local MIS, or consolidated in another MIS elsewhere in the infrastructure.

All management applications, regardless of which MIS they are connected to, can seamlessly access the management information of a particular managed object without knowledge of where the specific information resides. As an integral part of the MIS, Solstice Enterprise Manager software provides intelligent event management to automatically detect and proactively manage user-defined network faults. The intelligent event management services can be used to filter less important alarms, and to correlate alarms for determining the root cause.

To improve response time to impending critical faults, automatic responses can be initiated upon receipt of defined alarm conditions. With automatic responses in place, operators can focus their energy on real network faults that affect service levels, ensuring that customer care is maintained at the highest level. Organizations that take advantage of intelligent event management and automatic management can improve both network and network element availability.

Management protocol adapters
Solstice Enterprise Manager software supports industry-standard management protocols that allow developers to rapidly adopt and take advantage of new management protocol technologies without affecting their investment in existing management infrastructure, policies, or procedures. CMIP, SNMP, SNMPv2C, JMX, and RPC protocols are supported out of the box through Solstice Enterprise Manager MPAs. These adapters translate MIS requests into protocol-specific primitives (for example, CMIP, SNMP, SNMPv2C, Java, RMI, and RPC), and inversely translate when receiving alarms or events from a managed object.

To extend translation—and to address legacy and future management protocols—additional MPAs can be added without any required enhancement to the management applications or MIS. Using Solstice Enterprise Manager MPAs, organizations can bridge existing technologies with legacy or future protocols.

Developer extensibility
The primary method of extending the management foundation of Solstice Enterprise Manager software is through the Portable Management Interface (PMI) API. This object-oriented, C++ interface encapsulates the MIS and is used by developers when creating new applications that take advantage of distributed services provided by Solstice Enterprise Manager software.

For example, through this interface, developers can automatically access any managed object known to the MIS. Utilizing this feature enables developers to reduce the complexity of code and how long it takes to specify the location and the protocol required to access managed objects. A Solstice Enterprise Manager Toolkit containing the complete API set and additional software tools is available for developers.

Java development environment
The Java development environment provided by Solstice Enterprise Manager offers a high-level set of Java APIs and associated infrastructure to enable telecom and data communication developers to develop low-cost, multiplatform services and applications that utilize Java technology.
