Mobile Enterprise

Messaging and PIM

Messaging and personal information management (PIM) are usually the first mobile applications that enterprises roll out to employees. These simple capabilities can have an enormous impact on productivity. Research has shown that mobile access to email alone can save nearly an extra hour a day per worker resulting in a return on investment (ROI) of less than two weeks. (1)

Messaging and PIM applications include:

  • Real-Time Access to Email and Calendars
Mobile workers can confirm appointments without having to make a call or wait until returning to the office. Email, calendars, to do lists and memos can be synchronized to the device at the office and responded to remotely.
  • Event-Triggered Alerts
When employees are able to receive urgent, event-triggered alerts regarding business appointments and news (such as price changes, inventory levels or competitive information), they can make timely, important decisions while away from a desk or computer. Depending upon the applications, rules for triggering alerts can be established by users or system administrators through the use of a simple portal. Users can also establish which of many devices should be alerted, and define the alert times. For example, someone may want to be alerted during the day by a personal device assistant (PDA), and in the evening by phone.
  • Location-Based Services
These services improve the mobile experience by allowing mobile workers to find addresses, companies and locate inventory and support staff more efficiently.

  • Multi-Device Access - PIM, email and content can be extended to any Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), NTT i-mode phone or PDAs, pagers and Internet-connected devices compatible with WML, cHTML or HTML. This means you are not locked into any one device as you would be with point solutions.
  • Rapid Deployment - Sun ONE Portal Server Mobile Access provides mobile access to data served from the Sun ONE Messaging Server and Sun ONE Calendar Servers.
  • Support for Short Message Service (SMS) notifications - Sun ONE Portal Server Mobile Access supports SMS alerts, which can be configured to notify mobile users of urgent events. SMS is enabled through notification technology in the Sun ONE Messaging and Calendar Servers.
  • Location-Based Services - These services improve the mobile experience by allowing mobile workers to find addresses, companies and more efficiently locate inventory and support staff.
  • Single Sign-On - Allows access with a single sign to multiple portal services and applications during the same connection. This avoids the need to sign on individually to each service the first time it is used.
  • Standards Based - The Sun ONE Portal Server Mobile Access uses standard Internet protocols such as IMAP, XML, LDAP and HTTP to help reduce development time and speed deployment through open, flexible architectures.
