Singapore Airlines has rolled out Sun Microsystem's StarOffice software in its new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft becoming the first ever airline to install a productivity suite for the benefits of its passengers.
In the category of Productivity Applications, the eWeek Excellence Awards judges were looking for products that do more than just copy Microsoft's Office suite. Sun's StarOffice 8 does just that, offering unique features and a multiplatform system that meets the OASIS ODF standard.
Ultimately, the council decided to move over to Sun's StarOffice suite.
Based on the open source OpenOffice.org suite, StarOffice provides a
complete, supported, cross-platform office solution.
Sun Microsystems Tuesday plans to release a new version of StarOffice
that includes new features to address the software's compatibility with
Microsoft Office.
Massachusetts plans to phase out office productivity applications from Microsoft and other providers in favor of those based on the "open" standards of the OASIS Open Document Format, used in StarOffice 8.
The most widely used alternative to Office is an open-source program
