FAQs for Sun VDI Software 3Here are the answers to your general and technical questions.
Q:
What's new in Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
This release is focused on integration with Open Storage to reduce storage consumption, built-in virtualization to increase the choice of virtual desktop operating systems, and improved interaction with VMware and Microsoft Active Directory. There are many more features. Please refer to the features page for additional information.
Q:
I see that Sun VDI Software 3 has built-in virtualization. Can I still use VMware to host virtual desktops?
A:
Absolutely. Most people will have VMware in-house and Sun VDI Software 3 support for VMware is better than ever. New in this release is support for multiple vCenter servers, which means that VMware environments can scale larger than before.
Q:
What does built-in virtualization mean?
A:
Sun VDI Software 3 includes VirtualBox for VDI. This component is a hypervisor that runs on the server, but is well suited to hosting desktop operating systems. Customers can opt for the built-in virtualization using VirtualBox or use VMware Infrastructure to host their virtual desktops (or a mixture of both).
Q:
What about VMware View?
A:
VMware View is directly supported in Sun Ray Software. Please see the Sun Ray Software page for more information.
Q:
Can I use my PC to connect to Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
Yes. If you're running Microsoft Windows, just use the built in Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services) client.
Q:
What about a Wyse thin client?
A:
Just like a PC, you can use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection client with many thin clients. However, certain third party RDP clients do not function properly, so please test your desired configuration to be sure.
Q:
Does the perpetual license include support?
A:
No, support must be purchased separately. It is recommended that customers purchase either standard or premium support. Basic support is the lowest cost support offering, but only includes updates, patches and knowledge base access.
Q:
Can I upgrade from Sun Ray Software or Sun Secure Global Desktop Software to Sun VDI Software 3 for free?
A:
Customers of these other products must purchase Sun VDI Software 3 at the standard price.
Q:
Does Sun VDI Software 3 run on Linux?
A:
No, but you can provide a Linux virtual desktop (with Ubuntu) by running that operating system on the Sun built-in virtualization.
Q:
Can I use have multiple virtual desktops with the Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
Yes, when accessing from a Sun Ray client.
Q:
Can I use multiple desktops with the Sun Secure Global Desktop Software license included in Sun VDI Software 3 from a Mac or a PC?
A:
No. Just as in version 2.0, the version of Sun Secure Global Desktop Software licensed with Sun VDI Software 3 is for a single desktop per user only.
Q:
Can I do application publishing with the Sun Secure Global Desktop Software license included in Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
Customers wishing to do application publishing with Sun Secure Global Desktop Software will need to purchase a full license for the product.
Q:
Can I install other virtual desktop operating systems other than the ones listed?
A:
Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2000, OpenSolaris and Ubuntu are the only virtual desktop operating systems that are tested by Sun. It's possible that other operating systems will work, but they are unsupported.
Q:
When would I use an RDP client versus the Sun Secure Global Desktop (SGD) client to connect to Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
Straight RDP connections using the built-in RDP redirection are good on the LAN and when the overhead of setting up a separate server is too difficult. However, using Sun Secure Global Desktop Software allows for good quality connections over the WAN and enhanced encryption capabilities.
Q:
Can I just use the version of VirtualBox that I download from virtualbox.org with Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
The included version has been modified to work out of the box with Sun VDI Software 3, so it's required. Using the public download of VirtualBox will cause problems for your installation of Sun VDI Software 3.
Q:
Do I still have to install Sun Ray Software and the Sun Virtual Desktop Connector separately?
A:
No. These items, along with the Sun Ray Connector for Windows OS, have been integrated into a single installer to greatly simplify installation. However, if the customer opts to use built-in virtualizaton, VirtualBox for VDI must be installed separately on a separate physical server.
Q:
Which virtualization host should I use, VMware or Sun's built-in virtualization?
A:
Sun VDI Software 3 provides a choice so users can decide what works best for them. And in many cases, it will be appropriate to mix the two platforms together. At a very high level, VMware scales very well, whereas Sun built-in virtualization supports more virtual desktop operating systems.
Q:
How do you reduce storage consumption in Sun VDI Software 3?
A:
By integrating with Solaris ZFS and the Open Storage platform, Sun VDI Software 3 is able to take advantage of ZFS snapshots to create instant clones of virtual machines that consume virtually no disk space. As users modify their virtual machines, storage space is used, but only the differences between their virtual machines and the original images consume disk space.
Q:
Do I build my own Open Storage system or is there something I can buy that is ready to go?
A:
The Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems are based on Open Storage and offer breakthrough storage economics. These systems are tested with Sun VDI Software 3 and are fully supported, including support for instant virtual machine cloning.
Q:
Does it matter which virtualization host I use in conjunction with the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems?
A:
The Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems are an ideal storage platform for both VMware and Sun built-in virtualization. One area that differs is that users get instant virtual machine cloning in Sun VDI Software 3 only when using Sun built-in virtualization.
