With the deployment of Sun Servers based on the dual-core AMD CPU together with a massive consolidation and virtualization of services by using VMware the city of Bad Soden am Taunus achieves huge savings in energy used for powering the IT equipment. In addition to the consolidation of servers the IT department of the city introduced concepts of high availability, i.e. a redundant server infrastructure — strongly recommended for highly consolidated environments — and replaced 80 desktop computers by a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure with Sun Ray Ultra Thin Clients.
