What Types of Engagements are There?
Each collaboration at the Sun Solution Centers is unique and designed to meet each customer's individual requirements.
An engagement can last anywhere from a few hours to a few months, and may include the participation of as many as 30 individuals, including customer executives, IT staff, and project leads, as well as Sun technology experts, Sun Solution Center staff, and Sun partners.
|
Our engagement process includes four levels: Vision & Value, Planning & Workshop, Proof-of-Concept/Sizing, and Performance & Scalability.
Customers may choose to engage at any of these levels, depending on their needs. For example, customers that are ready to begin developing a prototype may choose to begin with at the Planning & Workshop level.
Or, a customer that simply needs benchmarking services would start at the Performance & Scalability level. In all cases, the Sun Solution Centers offer flexibility to meet specific customer needs.

- Levels of Engagement: Vision & Value
At the first engagement level, the Sun Solution Centers provides customers with an orientation to the Centers' value and a vision of their capabilities. All members of a customer team, from engineers
through the CIO or CTO, meet the Sun partners and Sun engineers and technology experts that make up the engagement team.
In addition, participants get an introduction to the facility's state-of-the-art technology and a walkthrough of the Center's various technology and solution demonstrations.
The group also discusses customer goals and expectations and starts to outline the specifics of the engagement.
- Levels of Engagement: Planning & Workshop
The second level of engagement is focused on planning specific details in a session that can last from a half day to two days.
During planning, the group develops a solution architecture, creates a project plan, reviews customer expectations, and sets a timeline.
After planning is completed, some customers may choose to conduct a collaborative workshop on a specific aspect of their engagement.
Customers begin a workshop engagement with a specific topic or problem that Sun helps them understand and analyze, and then the group works together to discuss potential solutions.
Examples of workshop topics include RFID integration, architecture design, and testing.
The Sun Solution Centers' collaborative nature is particularly important during planning and workshops.
Input from customers, partners, and Sun engineers and technology experts ensures that all factors affecting the project, such as architecture design, hardware requirements, integration issues, and performance requirements, are addressed early in the discussion.
- Levels of Engagement: Proof-of-Concept/Sizing
Proof-of-Concept/Sizing engagements are driven by customers who want to see a working prototype of a Sun technology-based business solution to their business problem.
Each engagement addresses unique customer needs and requirements.
A Proof-of-Concept/Sizing engagement team includes customers, Sun Solution Center staff, the Sun Account team, ISV partners, and system integration partners, if required.
These players work jointly on integration and interoperability among the solutions' technology components, reproducing the problems customers face in their production environments, and then showing how the solution solves those problems.
At the conclusion of these engagements customers have a proof-of-concept blueprint with detailed information on system architecture, configuration, implementation, and application integration and interoperability.
- Levels of Engagement: Performance & Scalability
Performance & Scalability engagements provide customers with opportunities to test system performance and solution scalability.
Customers frequently engage with the Sun Solution Centers to run specific benchmarks or test performance of a specific system.
Depending on customer needs and the solution being tested, a Performance & Scalability engagement can last from two weeks to eight weeks.
