Grant Awards

Currently, the Change Your World grant program is awarding a limited number of remanufactured Sun server products:

  • All systems are built, tested, and certified to meet the same high quality standards as our new products and come with the same hardware warranty as new equipment. Sun Warranty Support Information.
  • All servers come with the Solaris 10 Operating System pre-installed on the system.
  • Grants do NOT include installation or software support. To learn more about the service plans available for purchase, see Sun Systems Service Plans For Solaris.

Technology Focus Area

The Change Your World grant program focuses on projects that incorporate one or more of Sun's open source software technologies into classroom curriculum, research or other academic programs. Priority will be given to projects that promote education and advancement of Java, NetBeans, OpenSolaris, and MySQL.

Below are just a few examples of the kinds of projects we look for.

Curriculum Focusing On OpenSolaris
  • Operating Systems Courses. Use DTrace to study the workings of the operating system. Ask questions about the system and write your own D program to find the answers.
  • File Systems Courses. Study ZFS and compare to other file systems.
  • Application Programming. Use DTrace and Performance Analyzer to study and improve application performance.
Application Development
  • Create new applications, games and tools for the OpenSolaris operating system.
  • Port applications, games and tools to OpenSolaris.
  • Use NetBeans IDE plug-ins that result in put-backs to the NetBeans community.
