Immersive Education

Immersive Education is a learning and collaboration platform that combines interactive 3D graphics, commercial game and simulation technology, virtual reality, voice, chat, Web cameras and rich digital media with collaborative online course environments and classrooms. Immersive Education gives participants a sense of "being there" even when attending a class or training session in person isn't possible, practical, or desirable, which in turn provides educators and students with the ability to connect and communicate in a way that greatly enhances the learning experience.

Originally available only to university students, the next generation of Immersive Education is focused on a broad spectrum of academic and non-academic users including Higher Education, K-12, and corporate training and industry applications.

The Sun Immersion Special Interest Group is a Sun Microsystems Inc. sponsored community dedicated to advancing the state of open source technology and content for virtual worlds and gaming in education based on Sun's open source Project Wonderland, Project Darkstar and SunSPOT technologies. It is open to institutions, commercial organizations, faculty and students interested in working with Sun in learning and sharing practical experiences in new 3-D Web environments.

What's New

Sun Immersion Platform
Developing and Deploying Open Source Collaboration and Learning systems for the 3-D Web

Sun's Immersive Education Platform consists of three foundation open source technologies, applications and tools powered by SunFIRE Server and Open Storage systems:

  • Project Wonderland - an open source toolkit for creating collaborative 3D virtual worlds. Within those worlds, users can communicate with high-fidelity, immersive audio, share live desktop applications and documents and conduct real business. Wonderland is completely extensible; developers and graphic artists can extend its functionality to create entire new worlds and new features in existing worlds.
  • Project Darkstar - aims to help developers and operators avoid a range of serious, yet typical, problems associated with massive scale online games, virtual worlds, and social networking applications today, including zone overloading, data corruption, and server underutilization. Project Darkstar enables developers to support new dimensions of play such as evolving virtual worlds and very large scale battlefields
  • Sun SPOTs (Sun Small Programmable Object Technology) - small, wireless, battery-powered devices developed at Sun Labs to explore the next frontier of network computing. These devices can be used in a wide range of applications including robotics, environmental monitoring, asset tracking, proactive health care and data visualization in Project Wonderland virtual worlds
