The Sun Academic Initiative is one of many programs Sun offers to further its collaborative relationship with educational institutions. As part of this program, schools become authorized to deliver training on Sun technologies to their students, faculty, and staff. The Sun Academic Initiative offers non-profit academic institutions access to free Web-based training and curricula, including courses in the latest Java and Solaris technologies.

Benefits for the Student

The initiative gives students around the world a competitive edge as they enter the workforce. The main requirements for ILT participation are as follows:

  • Submit the Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) School Application and supplementary ILT Application
(SAI will review your application and determine your eligibility. Not all Institutions will be accepted into the program - Sun Learning Services has the right to accept or decline an application).
  • The SAI-ILT Program is designed for undergraduate educational institutions (including elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, colleges/universities and graduate schools.
  • SAI-ILT courses are only available in English.
  • It is not a requirement that the instructor/ teacher is certified before teaching the courses.

Certification

In addition to the training and curricula, the Sun Academic Initiative offers to help prepare students to become Sun Certified. What does it mean to get Sun Certified? For starters, Sun certification is recognized industry-wide and it demonstrates competency in high-demand Sun technologies, such as the Java programming language and Solaris Operating System. With certification comes acknowledgment of specific technology skill sets. Much like a university diploma functioned years ago, this proof of tangible skills and knowledge opens doors that may have previously remained closed. Professional certification mitigates the gap between what graduating students know and what they need to know in order to perform certain job roles and remain marketable.

The Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) Program participant will have access to ePractice Certification Exams to prepare for Sun Certification. These no-cost web based practice exams will acquaint your students, faculty and staff with the format of the exams and its questions. The practice exams includes sample test questions, the correct answers with explanations, and provides the test taker suggestions for future study. Additionally, its available 24 hours a day.

Discounted Certification
Once the Sun Academic Initiative (SAI) Program participants are ready to take the Sun Certification Exams, the Sun Academic Initiative program provides heavily discounted rates for select certification tests. For example, exams that normally cost $500 for professionals are only $40 worldwide through the Sun Academic Initiative. That's a savings of more than 90%! Certification in Sun technologies gives students increased opportunities for job placement and career advancement.

Industry-recognized credentials through Sun Learning Services (SLS) professional certification programs are available in the these key areas:
