Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q:
Where would I use each of the four database offerings mentioned?
A:
Follow these general guidelines.
- Microsoft SQL Server runs best in a windows environment. This database can be coupled with with .NET and JAVA infrastructure to deliver simple to complex IT solutions. Microsoft SQL server only runs in Windows Server 2005 or 2008 on x64 servers.
- MySQL is not only the world's most popular open source database; it's also the fastest growing database in the industryâwith more than 10 million active installations and over 50,000 downloads per day. Sun's Open Source Software Stack (CoolStack) distribution is optimized for the robust Solaris 10 OS, which runs in both CoolThreads and x64 servers. In addition, MySQL is available for Windows and Linux environment on x64 servers as well.
- PostgreSQL is one of the leading open source enterprise database platforms, with support for complex queries, multi-terabyte databases and thousands of concurrent users, equivalent to the top proprietary database systems. PostgresSQL comes fully integrated in Solaris 10, so you can safely host multiple database instances on a single system with complete fault and security isolation with Solaris Containers and improve manageability of your PostgreSQL servers using the Service Management Framework. PostgresSQL runs in both CoolThreads and x64 servers. In addition, PostgreSQL is also available for Windows and Linux on x64 servers.
- Oracle Database 11g is designed to be a highly scalable database that can scale from mid-size to enterprise class. Oracle Database 11g is optimized for Solaris 10 running Coolthreads as well as x64 servers. In addition, Oracle Database 11g is also available for Windows and Linux on x64 servers.
Q:
Which servers are best for me—Rack or Blade?
A:
Follow these basics:
- Choose Blade servers if you require:
- Simplified maintenance, with quick and easy addition of new servers
- High density deployment, with at least 4 servers and expansion to 10 or more servers in the future
- Simplified cable management of multiple servers
- Choose Rack servers if you require:
- Servers of different compute capacity (1-processor, 2-processor, 4-processor, 8-processor)
- Only a few servers (less than 4) in one location
- More than 2 I/O slots in a server, especially when PCI-E or PCI-X cards are needed
