For faster Web deployment and enhanced flexibility, Sun offers both x86/x64 and CoolThreads server solutions:
- For x86/x64 environments, we recommend a low-cost, high-performance Sun x86/x64 server running the Solaris 10 OS and free, preloaded Apache Web server software, plus external direct-attached storage or SAN storage
- For high-throughput, energy-efficient solutions, we recommend a Sun CoolThreads rack or blade server running the free, open source Solaris 10 OS with Solaris Containers, and Apache, Lighttpd, or Sun Java Web Server, plus external direct-attached storage or SAN storage
- For maximum compatibility with Microsoft software applications, Sun x86/x64 servers can virtualize the Microsoft IIS Web server or Apache using Microsoft Virtual Server
- Choice of Intel or AMD quad-core processors can increase web application performance at lower costs

What are Solaris Containers?
A:
Solaris Containers (including Solaris Zones) are an implementation of operating system-level virtualization technology first made available as part of the Solaris 10 OS. A Solaris Container is the combination of system resource controls and the boundary separation provided by zones. Zones act as completely isolated virtual servers within a single operating system instance. By consolidating multiple sets of application services onto one system—by placing each into isolated virtual server containers—system administrators can reduce costs and provide all the same protection of separate machines, on a single machine.
Q:
How is Solaris Containers different from VMware ESX or Logical Domains (LDoms)?
A:
Solaris Containers provides a virtual environment to run applications separately from each other while sharing the same Solaris 10 OS. VMware ESX is a hypervisor that runs on bare x86/x64 systems and allows multiple operating systems to be installed on the same hardware system. The operating systems each see their own virtual hardware independent from others. LDoms technology provides the hypervisor for Sun CoolThreads servers, allowing multiple separate operating systems to take advantage of the 32 to 64 hardware threads available in the CoolThreads server.

Which servers are best for me—Rack or Blade?
A:
Here is a basic guide:
- Choose Blade servers if you require:
- Simplified maintenance, with quick and easy addition of new servers
- High density deployment, with at least 4 servers and expansion to 10 or more servers in the future
- Simplified cable management of multiple servers
- Choose Rack servers if you require:
- Servers of different compute capacity (1-processor, 2-processor, 4-processor, 8-processor)
- Only a few servers (less than 4) in one location
- More than 2 I/O slots in a server, especially when PCI-E or PCI-X cards are needed
