High availability architecture

The StorageTek 6140 array architecture includes the non-disruptive addition of capacity and volumes, RAID and segment size migration, and switched technology with point-to-point connections. All components in the array's data path are redundant and eliminate any single point of failure. If one component fails, the StorageTek 6140 array automatically fails-over to the alternate component, ensuring continuous uptime and uninterrupted data availability.

High availability components ensure data availability

Every component in the StorageTek 6140 array (from the disk drives to the midplane) is hot-swappable. Hot spares in every storage tray of the StorageTek 6140 array ensures high availability. Hot-spare drives can be allocated from unused drives and are always powered up and available as a spare to any virtual disk in any tray. Each array controller has two power supplies, each with its own battery backup system providing redundant power.

Data services support business continuity

Optional software solutions within the StorageTek 6140 array can significantly boost your business continuity. For example, Sun StorageTek Data Replicator software enables synchronous and asynchronous replication to remote sites over Fibre Channel or IP. The Sun StorageTek Data Snapshot software lets you conserve costly disk space by using real-time copies of critical volumes. And, the Sun StorageTek Volume Copy software lets you create independent copies of production volumes quickly and securely.

Non-disruptive growth

The StorageTek 6140 array easily adapts to change without disrupting existing applications. Compatible storage modules enable non-disruptive system upgrades and data-in-place migration of assets to current and generations. The compatible and common array management across the entire Sun StorageTek Series 6000 product line protects your investment in management tools, training, and forklift upgrades.

Scaling up to 16 disk drives per tray with up to six expansion trays makes the StorageTek 6140 array the ideal solution for growing enterprises. It supports up to 112 disks and 112 terabytes, which equates to immense data capacity in a small footprint. Choose four or eight 4-gigabit Fibre Channel ports and two or four gigabytes of cache for connectivity into a Storage Area Network (SAN). Start small and add storage, non-disruptively, only when you need it.

Match storage to information value

Intermix Fibre Channel and SATA drives and design a tiered storage environment that matches storage cost to the current value of data along with centralized management and integrated data services for business continuity. Use expansion trays with Fibre Channel drives for high performance applications while moving secondary storage to less expensive expansion trays loaded with SATA drives.

Use just one interface

The SMI-S compliant Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager interface provides an easy-to-use interface to configure, manage and monitor the StorageTek 6140 array. Use the Configuration Service browser interface to access the Storage Automated Diagnostic Environment software to diagnose problems, view events, and monitor array health. Benefit from built-in performance tracking and automated diagnostics and get the most out of your arrays and investment.
