Next-Generation Data Protection
Minimize cost and complexity Now you can minimize the cost and complexity of data protection and ensure greater business continuity with a solution that unifies desktop, remote office, and datacenter data protection across the enterprise. Veritas NetBackup 6.5 centralizes backup and recovery management and provides you with the tools you need to manage data in complex, heterogeneous environments.

The industry's best VMware backup solution NetBackup delivers a comprehensive solution for VMware protection, providing off-server (proxy-based) backup, granular file-level and image-level recovery from a single backup, and deduplication. NetBackup leverages VMware's Consolidated Backup interface to provide off-server backup of virtual machines stored on SAN storage. NetBackup leverages VMware Consolidated Backup to remove the backup burden from the primary VMware server host. NetBackup 6.5 also introduces a breakthrough capability to enable a single image-level backup to deliver both full-image or granular file-level recovery. VMware backups can be performed to tape or disk, and you can apply the new PureDisk Deduplication Option for deduplication and replication of VMware backups. The backup client mounts the file containing the virtual machine and backs it up directly, eliminating the high overhead that would take place if clients were installed into every virtual machine. But unlike other backup products, which only allow the entire virtual machine to be restored, NetBackup allows you to restore individual files from within the virtual machine backup. This greatly reduces the time required to restore individual files from a VMware-based backup.

Unlock the power of disk-based backup NetBackup 6.5 features new capabilities that allow you to take full advantage of the power of disk-based data protection. Now you can leverage native data deduplication across the entire NetBackup environment, from desktops and laptops to remote office servers and enterprise datacenters. The software also includes native disk backup capabilities that enable pooling, sharing, and backup over a SAN to a large pool of shared disk. The software’s disk-based backup capabilities are deeply integrated with intelligent appliances and virtual tape libraries, and enable heterogeneous snapshot and continuous-data-protection management. You can leverage any type of disk to make backups faster, more reliable, and more secure, including DAS, NAS, SAN, VTL, snapshots/replicas, and Open Storage. Disk-based backup integrates data deduplication with any storage system, and provides continuous protection, making it possible to eliminate backup windows. Disk-based backup lets you shrink your backup window while providing faster restores. Intelligent disk pool management drastically reduces the administrative overhead associated with leveraging disk-based backup.

Flexible Licensing Options In addition to simplifying the server-based licensing model, NetBackup 6.5 offers you a capacity-based licensing option that eliminates the need to identify the specific modules you want to license. Simply calculate how much capacity you will be backing up, and you're ready to get started.

Enable more frequent backups The NetBackup Snapshot Client bundles together a suite of flexible and advanced disk snapshot technologies for faster backups and restores or lower impact backups. This enables more frequent backups and significantly enhances the types of restores that are possible for more applications, including VMware and Oracle databases. Using a simple, easy-to-use client interface, a snapshot wizard helps you configure snapshots and use them to perform advanced backup and recovery operations. The suite enables instant recovery of critical applications to any point in time, and also integrates Network Appliance Snapshot and SnapRestore.

Streamline recovery with Bare Metal Restore Veritas NetBackup 6.5 offers fast, fully automated restores of Windows and UNIX servers with Bare Metal Restore, which brings servers online quickly in the event of a disaster. Bare Metal Restore is fully integrated with Veritas NetBackup 6.5 and automates and streamlines the server recovery process. This makes it unnecessary to manually reinstall operating systems or configure hardware. Using simple commands, Bare Metal Restore rebuilds systems from scratch within minutes, without extensive training or time-consuming administration.

New features enhance Bare Metal Restore performance
  • Windows Network Boot enables a Bare Metal Restore client to boot over the network during the recovery process, rather than from a local floppy disk or CD-ROM media
  • Windows Fast System Restores allows Bare Metal Restore to restore a Windows system in ten minutes
  • Windows Hardware Discovery extends Bare Metal Restore’s industry-leading Dissimilar System Restore technology to include the hardware discovery phase, enabling a fully automated restore onto the new hardware

Granular recovery for critical applications Fast recovery of critical applications requires not just the data, but also the servers and applications. NetBackup enables recovery of data, servers, and applications through one console. Its agents use vendor-approved APIs to ensure a consistent backup and recovery process, with a choice of host, array-based, or off-host snapshots and different levels of granularity of data recovery. NetBackup provides granular recovery for VMware, Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, and Microsoft Exchange. In addition, NetBackup provides rapid recovery with heterogeneous snapshot management and core system recovery in 15 minutes on any platform.
Unmatched Scalability and Performance
Unique three-tier architecture The unique three-tier architecture of Veritas NetBackup 6.5 provides a scalable, distributed framework of master server, media server, and client, enabling high-performance backup to DAS or SAN devices. The flexible architecture scales easily, enabling Veritas NetBackup to adapt to meet the needs of today’s growing datacenter.

Disk staging and synthetic backups protect your investment Veritas NetBackup 6.5 now includes disk staging, a schedule-driven mechanism for writing backups to disk, then copying the backup image to either disk or tape so the original backup image can be removed to free up disk space for new backup images. Disk staging leverages high performance disk as a cache before storing backup data on long-term storage, such as tape. Automated disk staging helps reap the benefits of both tape and disk media while providing investment protection. Disk staging facilitates faster backups and restores, because it prevents network latency from causing tape drives to “shoe-shine”, or repeatedly stop, rewind, and restart, reducing the wear on tear on both tape drives and media. Non-multiplexed backup images can be used for faster recovery, so you can meet your Recovery Time Objectives (RTO). Synthetic backup functionality also significantly enhances backup and recovery operations. You can store your incremental backups on disk and then synthesize them into a full backup and process the data to tape, helping to reduce the time required to perform a recovery. Synthetic backups reduce the amount of data being moved over the network, drastically reducing client overhead and minimizing the network bandwidth required for backup.

Media Server Load Balancing reduces management overhead NetBackup 6.5 automatically selects the least-busy media server for a given backup job. This eliminates the tedious, error-prone process of manually balancing the backup load among multiple media servers. It also improves reliability, because if the media server goes down the backups will automatically re-route to other available servers.

Intelligent Disk Capacity Management NetBackup automatically selects the best disk target based on the size of the backup, and spans volumes if the backup is larger than the space remaining on any individual volume. This capability increases reliability by eliminating failures due to disk-full conditions. It automatically expires backups based on the value of the data as defined in your Storage Lifecycle Policies, increasing the likelihood that important backup images will still be on disk for faster restore.

Database- and application-aware backup and recovery NetBackup supports all leading databases and applications, including Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, Lotus Notes and Domino Server, SAP, Sybase, and Informix.

Dynamic tape drive sharing With the NetBackup Shared Storage Option, NetBackup virtualizes tape drive resources between heterogeneous systems, driving greater efficiency in tape drive utilization for both backup and recovery. Plus, the new Virtual Tape Option bases pricing on native disk capacity managed by NetBackup, providing customers with a more flexible, cost-effective solution for virtual tape devices.
Simplified Management
Single, intuitive Web portal NetBackup provides a single platform to manage, protect, and recover data across storage tiers, locations, disk technologies, and operating systems to optimize data-protection processes and improve staff utilization. This single management console lets you control the lifecycle of backup data across storage tiers that include both disk and tape. It enables you to gain control over the backup methods, target media, and recover process, so you can prioritize the allocation of resources based on the data’s importance. NetBackup simplifies backup infrastructure management by automating the delivery of application and client updates with LiveUpdate technology.

NetBackup Operations Manager increases efficiency NetBackup Operations Manager provides you with cutting-edge management, monitoring, alerting, reporting, and troubleshooting capabilities. It provides you with more information about your environment so you can quickly and efficiently take the appropriate action and mange more systems, data, and locations per administrator.

Media sharing lowers costs The Media Sharing feature in NetBackup allows multiple NetBackup media servers to actively share a given tape media for write purposes. Media sharing reduces tape media-related expenses by enabling increased media utilization, which in turn reduces the amount of partially full media and total pieces of tape media required to store a given amount of backup data.

Protection through proliferation You can run NetBackup master and media servers on a wide array of operating systems, including Solaris 10 on AMD and Intel processors. Client support now includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, AIX 5.3, SUSE 9, and Red Hat 4.
