Sun StorageTek 5220 NAS Appliance

Sun StorageTek 5220 NAS Appliance

Features and Benefits

No Longer Orderable

This product has reached end-of-life and is no longer orderable. It is superceded by the next generation Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems.

This feature-rich appliance covers a lot of roles: flexible policy-based services, integrated file system journaling, check pointing, antivirus scanning, and even powerful options for regulatory compliance and remote mirroring. Its high-performance serial-ATA back-end RAID architecture scales to 24 terabytes. In short, it's an invaluable boost in availability assurance.

Key Benefits

  • Multi-protocol integration and secure data sharing between UNIX and Windows clients
  • Optional StorageTek File Replicator software for remote data mirroring among StorageTek NAS appliances
  • Protects computers with integrated real-time antivirus scanning
  • Lowers costs and simplifies data access with iSCSI target support

Easy Installation and Use

Installation Wizard

Facilitates installation by automatically detecting first-time access and leading the user through an intuitive, 10-15 minute set of dialogs, after which the StorageTek NAS system is ready to use.

Indicator LEDs

Enables operations personnel to easily identify problematic components and prevents mistakes in servicing.

High Performance and Rapid Growth

Advanced technology saves data faster

The Sun StorageTek 5220 NAS Appliance combines software and hardware technology in an easy-to-manage entry level NAS storage appliance. Its operating system is optimized for file serving and file storage, and it uses a 64-bit journaling file system specifically designed to ensure data integrity. The StorageTek File Checkpoint and StorageTek File Replicator are important applications that provide an additional level of data protection. The hardware design is based on a server-class AMD Opteron platform for excellent performance.

Robustness keeps it safe

The journaling file system helps to ensure data integrity across unforeseen events, such as power outages. Checkpoints give you static images of the file system, enabling rapid recovery of mistakenly deleted files or objects, and facilitating system backup. Combined with hardware RAID, battery-backed RAID cache, hot swappable drives, global spares, redundant hot-swappable power supplies and optional UPS backup, the Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS provides exceptional robustness.

64-Bit Network Attached Storage (NAS) Operating System

Provides storage-optimized file serving and file storage for high performance. The OS resides on flash disk, which is more reliable than a traditional magnetic disk.

Plan for growth

The Sun StorageTek 5220 NAS Appliance scales to 24 TB. That's more than enough for most customers. But everyone grows, some faster than others: For larger volumes, the Sun StorageTek 5320 NAS Appliance scales to a full 224 TB. You've got a long growth path between the two systems.

AMD Opteron processor-based platform

AMD's Opteron processors, with Hyper transport technology and 128-bit wide DDR memory controller, offer faster data delivery over the network.

Quad integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports

Gigabit Ethernet ports provide outstanding network I/O performance and increased network reliability when you configure them for network failover.

High Reliability and Availability

External hardware RAID

The Sun StorageTek 5220 appliance gives you S-ATA hardware RAID-5, with battery-backed cache.

Robust availability

The combination of redundant power supplies and cooling fans, in both the NAS head and disk sub-system, reduce system outages in the event of StorageTek NAS power supply failure.

NIC failover

Provides a redundant path to the same IP address on the server through a different switch and using a cooperative (with the host) failover topology.

Port aggregation

Enables the use of the same IP address across multiple NIC ports from a single switch, increasing bandwidth and providing some degree of fault tolerance.

Service warranty

A three-year warranty gives you first-year next-business-day on-site service. For the second and third years, the product is returned to Sun.

Multiple hot-swappable components

Hot-swapping helps you achieve maximum data availability by eliminating downtime when failed components need to be replaced, or when proactive maintenance is performed. Hot-swap components include: server head power supplies, disk subsystem power supplies and disk drives.

E-mail diagnostics

Enables Sun’s support representatives or customers to quickly get a clear and comprehensive report describing system configuration and health.

Dynamic volume expansion

By eliminating capacity limitations, the Sun StorageTek 5220 appliance lets you do volume expansions during normal operations downtime.

Real-Time Anti-Virus (AV) Support

Support includes file scanning on File Open, File Close, or a combination. A full file system scan is available and is scheduled via disk map to a file system share to the accompanying AV Servers. One or more companion AV Servers are required to accomplish the Real-Time AV scan and full file system scan. The AV Servers can be pooled to a maximum of four servers to minimize latency, and an AV Real-Time scan is implemented by a standard API using RPC.

Sun StorageTek File Replicator optional block-level mirroring function

Ensures business continuance, even in the face of catastrophic loss of the primary (source) system:

  • All writes are communicated in time order from source to target, guaranteeing a consistent view of the state of user data at the remote site, at any point in time. (Note: Asynchronous mirroring does not guarantee that the state of the local and remote sites is identical or changed simultaneously. It provides only that each site is consistent to allow for target file system promotion at any time, and it updates in the same sequential order.)
  • When promoted to source (or master), the remote system always provides access to every in-order transaction it received from the original source, thereby providing the optimal architecture for data preservation in an asynchronous mirroring model.
  • Preserves write ordering, ensuring that files remain consistent on the mirror target, and ensuring that up-to-the-second updates are available should mirror promotion occur.
  • Individual Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS volumes can be mirrored from any system to any other Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS family system, giving you lots of flexible and cost-effective options for assuring data availability.
  • Fast reversion from source to target for maximum data availability and protection.
  • Network (Ethernet) based mirroring lowers costs and lets your users stick with their familiar and favorite technologies, without the need for expensive gateways.
