Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Media Encryption Package
Cisco Storage Media Encryption (SME) secures data stored on heterogeneous tape drives and virtual tape libraries in a SAN environment using secure IEEE standard Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit algorithms. Cisco SME is built upon FIPS level-3 system architecture, and offers secure, comprehensive key management, with support for offline media recovery.
Cisco SME uses cryptographic engines on the Cisco MDS 9222i Multiservice Modular Switch and Cisco MDS 9000 18/4-Port Multiservice modules (MPS-18/4), each providing enough throughput to sustain streaming continuously to multiple tape drives. Multiple encryption engines can be deployed in a Fibre Channel fabric to easily scale performance, enable load balancing, and increase availability.
Cisco SME hardware and software integration with the Cisco MDS 9000 family makes it easier to deploy and manage sensitive data on SAN attached storage devices. Unlike competitive offerings, Cisco SME requires no down time to deploy and no host agents. The Cisco MPS-18/4 modules are hot swappable, allowing them to be installed while an existing SAN is in use. No rewiring or SAN configuration changes are required, and encryption provisioning can be performed without shutting down applications.

The Cisco MDS 9000 Family Storage Media Encryption Package is licensed on a per-module basis. The total number of licenses needed for a SAN fabric is equal to the number of MPS-18/4 modules plus the number of fixed slots on Cisco MDS 9222i switches used for Cisco SME.
To use the Cisco MDS 9000 Family Storage Media Encryption Package, Cisco MDS 9000 SAN-OS Release 3.2(1) or later must be installed on a Cisco MDS 9200 series or MDS 9500 series switch.

Cisco MDS 9000 Data Mobility Manager
Cisco MDS Data Mobility Manager(DMM) is a storage area network
(SAN), fabric-based software application that enables movement of
blocks of data from a source device to a destination device. Such
movement is typically needed to address array lease expiration events,
capacity planning and implementation of tiered storage strategies.
The Cisco MDS 9000 DMM license can be used with Cisco MDS 9500 Multilayer Directors, Cisco MDS 9200 Series Multilayer Fabric Switches, Cisco MDS 9222i Multilayer Modular Switch and the Cisco MDS 9000 18/4-Port Mulit-Service Module.
There are 2 types of DMM licenses:
- Permanent License: This license (also called End User license) is only available to end users that will be deploying DMM for their own data migration needs. The permanent license may not be used by users that expect to use the MDS platform (with the SSM card) to sell migration services to other users.
- 180-day License: This license is a time-based license that is available to service provider users that expect to sell MDS platform-based migration services. Users that qualify for the permanent license may purchase the 180-day License if they so choose to do so.

This package is licensed on a per-slot basis. The number of licenses that a customer needs to purchase is equal to the number of SSMs the DMM feature needs to be enabled on.
The Cisco MDS 9000 DMM license can be used with Cisco MDS 9500 multilayer directors and Cisco MDS 9200 Series multilayer fabric switches i.e. any chassis that can accommodate an SSM card.
The Cisco DMM license can only be used on switches that run Cisco SAN-OS 3.2(1) or later. |
Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Services Enabler Package
When used with the Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Services Module (SSM) or the Cisco MDS 9000 Advanced Services Module (ASM), the Cisco
MDS 9000 Storage Services Enabler (SSE) package provides the underlying infrastructure and programmatic interface to enable intelligent fabric
applications. Without the SSE package, the ASM and SSM can be used for normal Fibre Channel storage-area-network (SAN) switching.
The SSE package enables the following features:
- Network-hosted storage applications
- Network-assisted storage applications (SANTap)
- Network-accelerated serverless backup

This package is licensed on a per-module basis. The number of licenses that a customer needs to purchase is equal to the number of SSMs or ASMs on which the intelligent fabric application feature is used. |
Cisco MDS 9000 Family San Extension Over IP Package
When used with Cisco MDS 9000 Family IP Storage Services in Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Directors and Cisco MDS 9200 Series
Multilayer Fabric Switches, the Cisco MDS 9000 Family SAN Extension Over IP package provides an integrated, cost-effective, and reliable
business continuance solution that uses existing IP infrastructure. The SAN Extension Over IP package included the following features:
- Integrated support for Fibre Channel Interface Protocol (FCIP)
- FCIP Compression
- Inter-VSAN Routing for FCIP
- FCIP Write Acceleration
- FCIP Tape Acceleration
- SAN Extension Tuner

This package is licensed on a per-module basis. The number of licenses that a customer needs to purchase is equal to the number of IP Storage Services and Multiprotocol Services modules in a switch. |
Cisco MDS 9000 Family Mainframe Package
The Cisco MDS 9000 Family Mainframe package is a comprehensive collection of features required for using the Cisco MDS 9000 Family
switches in mainframe storage networks. With the Mainframe package, the Cisco MDS 9000 Family has the capability to simultaneously support the Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP), Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI), Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP), and FICON protocols. Providing support for all these protocols within a single, high-availability platform simplifies purchasing and deployment, reduces management costs, and leads to optimal usage of storage resources across open systems and mainframes.
The Mainframe package provides the following features:
- Virtual SANs (VSANs) for FICON and FCP intermixing
- FICON Control Unit Port (CUP)
- Fabric Binding
- Switch Cascading
- FICON Tape Acceleration

This package is licensed per switch for all the ports in the switch. Some features can be used only if the package is licensed for all the switches in the fabric. |
Cisco MDS 9000 Family Fabric Manager Server Package
The standard Cisco Fabric Manager software that is included at no charge with the Cisco MDS 9000 Family multilayer switches provides basic switch configuration and troubleshooting capabilities. The Cisco MDS 9000 Family Fabric Manager Server (FMS) package extends standard Cisco Fabric Manager by providing historical performance monitoring for network traffic hotspot analysis, centralized management services, and advanced application integration. All standard Cisco Fabric Manager features and functions are fully integrated with the Cisco FMS capabilities.

Cisco MDS 9000 Family Enterprise Package
The SAN-OS software for the Cisco MDS 9000 Family includes a base set of features that are
required by most customers for building a storage area network (SAN). This base set of features is
bundled with MDS 9000 platforms at no charge. The Cisco MDS 9000 Family also has a set of
advanced traffic engineering and advanced security features that are recommended for all
Enterprise SANs. These optional features are bundled together in the Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise
package.

The Cisco MDS 9000 Family Enterprise Package is licensed per switch for all the ports in the
switch. Some package features can be used only if all the switches in the fabric have licenses for
this package. Customers who buy the Cisco MDS 9000 Family Enterprise Package with SAN-OS
Release 1.2(x) qualify for a no-charge upgrade to the package features of SAN-OS Release 1.3(x)
or later. |
Cisco MDS 9100 Multilayer Fabric Switch On-Demand Ports Licensing
The base configuration for Cisco MDS 9100 Multilayer Fabric Switches includes enough active
ports for the customer to build an entry-level storage area network (SAN). On-demand ports allow
the customer to benefit from Cisco MDS 9000 SAN-OS Software features, while initially purchasing
only a small number of activated ports on a Cisco MDS 9100 switch. Customers can expand
switch connectivity as needed by licensing additional ports.
