Thanks to server/virtualization consolidation and the rapid adoption of multi-core processors, many SAN users are feeling the pressure to transition to 8 Gb/sec network speeds. The 8 Gb/sec-ready Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802
lets you build next-generation SANs for today's infrastructure while also lowering the capital and operating expenses associated with an 8 Gb/sec rollout.
You know you need to migrate to 8 Gb/sec performance. But you also need a switch that integrates with your existing infrastructure. The affordable Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802 features a modular backbone architecture that lets you build SANs that will last far into the future while also cutting the cost of transition to 8 Gb/sec network speeds.
Backward compatibility protects your investment
The Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802 lets you connect 8 Gb/sec, 4 Gb/sec, or 2 Gb/sec devices to a SAN for about the same cost as competing 4 Gb/sec-only solutions. But unlike other products, the Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802 lets your phase bandwidth incrementally within your ISL fabric, which is the most performance-critical area of the SAN.
Plus, the Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802 is interoperable with all major storage, server, and infrastructure vendors, and includes SNMP support, available API, and SMI-S agent for integration into popular third-party management applications.
Always on 10 Gb/sec ISLs
Each Sun Storage FC Model 5802 switch ships with all four 10 Gb/sec stacking ports active by default. This means that basic inter-switch connectivity is now included with the product, eliminating the need to take ISL port costs into account when planning and purchasing your SANs. Every port you purchase may now be connected directly to a server or storage device.
What's more, 10 Gb/sec ISL speed provides more than enough bandwidth for the early stages of your 8 Gb/sec migration, when the majority of switch ports will be attached to 4 Gb/sec storage and other legacy devices.
20 Gb/sec bandwidth on-demand
When enough device ports are connected to 8 Gb/sec devices to require additional bandwidth, you can non-disruptively upgrade the ISL ports to 20 Gb/sec – the world's fastest Fibre Channel. Twenty Gb/sec is the only ISL technology that perfectly complements 8 Gb/sec device speeds and extends the stability, cost savings and performance benefits of a true backbone to next-generation SANs.
Fast, Reliable Performance
Full-duplex bandwidth at every port
The Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802 provides uncontested, full-duplex bandwidth at every port, for a total of 544 Gb/sec per switch. The ISL capacity expands automatically as device port count grows, ensuring a consistent user experience over time.
Full bandwidth architecture
Each switch features non-blocking performance. Plus, the dedicated 10 Gb/sec and 20 Gb/sec ISL transport makes it easier to create non-blocking multi-switch configurations.
Adaptive trunking
With the Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802, there are no extra cost or complicated licensing schemes. The exclusive, built-in trunking feature optimizes ISL se and performance by pooling the capacity of multiple 20 Gb/sec, 10 Gb/sec, or 8 Gb/sec links in a single, high-speed pipeline.
Trunks are automatically invoked as required, eliminating the need for manual configuration. Unlike other trunking implementations, trunked ports need not be sequential, and may even be spread across multiple switches. The switch-on exchange design supports Intelligent Path Selection, Fabric-Shortest-Path-First, and Virtual Trunking.
High availability
In addition to high performance, the Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802 delivers the highest availability. A variety of reliability features make the switch capable of delivering overall system availability greater than 99.999%. These features include:
I/O StreamGuard RSCN suppression - guaranteed bandwidth for time-sensitive applications such as video streaming
Hardware-enforced zoning by Worldwide Name
Hot-swappable dual power supply options
Non-disruptive code load and activation
Powerful, Intuitive Software
QuickTools
QuickTools is an embedded Java Web applet for device discovery, device management, zoning, and fabric management. It includes a configuration wizard and Drag-and-Drop zoning, the industry’s most intuitive zoning method.
Enterprise Fabric Suite
With Enterprise Fabric Suite, you can control software costs while managing your SAN with unprecedented levels of granularity. Enterprise Fabric Suite bundles high-value enterprise features, such as Fabric Tracker, Performance View, Port Threshold Alarms, Stack Management, and mPort movable port activation into a single site-licensed package. So you can spend less time and money licensing individual features or worrying about per-switch fees as your SAN grows.
SANdoctor
A comprehensive set of diagnostic tools for trouble-shooting fabric problems, SANdoctor includes media digital diagnostics, fabric trace-route, and fabric ping.
Fabric security
Fabric security provides the right mix of protection features for user, connection, and device security. This includes support for RADIUS authentication, Secure Shell (SSH), and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption. Device connection security uses Fibre Channel Security Protocol (FC-SP0, DH-CHAP, and FS-GS-4 CT.
Easy to Manage
Installation and configuration wizards
From basic switch setup to advanced zoning and extended distance configuration the Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802's automated routines make deployment a snap. Installation is a three-step point-and-click process and self-configuring switch ports automatically adjust to 8 Gb/sec, 4 Gb/sec, or 2 Gb/sec device speeds.
On-board GUI
You don't need to load any software with the Sun Storage FC Switch Model 5802. Just point a Web browser at any switch and manage the entire fabric from that location. No matter what your level of expertise, the Web-based QuickTools interface gives you everything you need for basic fabric management.
