Low error rate

While StorageTek DAT/DDS media offer error correction, the best way to eliminate errors is to avoid them in the first place. StorageTek DAT/DDS cartridges feature back coating with a very low friction coefficient, which enables smooth transport on even the most complex transport modes and mechanisms.

The extremely smooth base film and super-calendaring techniques give the magnetic layer a mirror finish that helps reduce the spacing loss that causes errors. Combined with the tape’s high output (+1.0 dB), this results in an extremely low error rate and higher efficiency.

The backward compatibility of newer Sun StorageTek tape technologies with older media extends the life of your existing media, lowering your TCO. For example, the Sun StorageTek DAT72 tape drive is fully read- and write-compatible with DDS-3 and DDS-4 tape media, as well as StorageTek DAT/DDS media.

Dual coating technology

StorageTek DAT/DDS data cartridges incorporate a dual-layer coating technology that has revolutionized the magnetic recording industry, and set a worldwide track record for storing, protecting, and securing data.

A non-magnetic lower layer and an ultra-thin upper layer of high-energy metal particles are applied simultaneously to base film, resulting in extremely low self-demagnetization, dramatically increased high-frequency output, and significantly higher recording density.

Recognized for their durability and sturdiness, StorageTek DAT/DDS data cartridges offer superior static resistance. This prevents dust accumulation and helps maintain an exceptionally low error rate over a long working life.

Lubricated for long life

When tape is used repeatedly, friction between the tape surface and the heads can abrade the tape surface and clog the heads. In StorageTek DAT/DDS tape media, lubricants are released from the lower layer of the tape to control friction and ensure that the tape surface is properly lubricated for stable transport after repeated use. This prevents clogging and improves data reliability.
