Key Benefits

  • Increased resource utilization
  • Enhanced RAS
  • Lower TCO
  • Better serviceability and redundancy improve uptime

Centralized Management Increases Utilization
Nearline Control Software (Host Software Component) The Host Software Component (HSC) provides centralized management of automated StorageTek libraries in an MVS/VM environment. HSC allows you to dynamically share libraries and slots among multiple mainframes, increasing utilization and reducing administrative costs. You can also add optional software that fits your specific needs, such as content management, reporting, and multi-host backup.

HSC enables you to reduce costs and increase utilization, thanks to simplified management and shared resources. HSC also allows you to dynamically allocate resources without hard partitioning tape slots. Plus, the software’s serviceability and redundancy features minimize scheduled and unscheduled downtime and maximize high availability.

HSC Software Options
  • Expert Library Manager (ExLM) software
Makes the most of automated storage systems with rules-based library content management, allowing administrators to minimize robotic and manual activities during peak production windows. ExLM manages library content and provides robust reporting on physical and virtual volumes. It works with HSC software, the Virtual Tape Control System (VTCS) software for the Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) System, and other tape-management systems. ExLM is a key technology for taking advantage of large capacity libraries such as the Sun StorageTek SL8500 tape library.

  • Expert Performance Report (ExPR) software
Automates performance reporting and simplifies management of manual tape systems, automated tape libraries and the Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) System. It gathers precise and timely information about tape usage and performance, so you can see who is using what resources, when and how efficiently.

  • Extended High Performance Data Mover (ExHPDM) software
Maximizes the effectiveness of the tape subsystem and speeds backup and restore processes, allowing fast data transfer to and from tape. The software, which resides on an MVS host, interleaves data from multiple disks into a single stream with large block sizes. With ExHPDM software, you can reduce the time it takes to back up your data by up to 60%. Versions 6.1 and 6.2 now support the T10000 drive, and starting with Version 6.2 there is no need to change your JCL in order to implement ExHPDM.

Library Console Software The Library Console software for the StreamLine library system makes the Sun StorageTek SL8500 modular library system easy to manage and monitor via a remote, network-based operator panel or an optional local touch-screen operator panel. All of the basic functions available on the local operator panel are also available remotely via the Ethernet-based remote interface.

Virtual Tape Control System Software Virtual Tape Control System (VTCS) software is the host software component of Sun's industry-leading Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) System solution. Virtual Tape Control software works in conjunction with the Virtual Tape Storage Subsystem (VTSS) hardware platform for the delivery of tapes in the mainframe environment. Version 6.2 adds the ability to perform hierarchical media management, wherein policies can be created which automatically migrate less-frequently used media. VTCS requires StorageTek Host Software Component (HSC) software as a prerequisite. VTCS is bundled only with VSM systems from Sun and cannot be ordered separately.

Virtual Storage Manager Virtual Storage Manager (VSM) improves media and transport use and conserves Nearline hardware resources. It eliminates inefficiencies by storing virtual tape volumes (VTVs) on a disk buffer on the Virtual Tape Storage Subsystem (VTSS). VSM migrates the VTVs to real Nearline tape volumes that are mounted on Nearline Real Tape Drives (RTDs). When needed by the host, the tape volumes are recalled to the VTSS, optimizing access and throughput.
Powerful Capabilities to Optimize Your Libraries
L-Series Library Admin Software The L-Series Library Admin software makes it easy to monitor and administer L-Series tape libraries from any Web browser on your network. The Web-based graphical user interface gives you all the functional capabilities available from the library operator panel, all via simple, two-level navigation. So you can gain greater control of your libraries and calm the chaos of rapid data growth. L-Series Library Admin software is often used with StreamLine Library Manager software and Framework Library Monitor software for complete library management of SCSI-attached tape libraries.

LibraryStation Software LibraryStation software automates MVS operations. Its client-server approach provides enterprise-wide storage management, remote vaulting, and shared library resources. LibraryStation software allows non-MVS users to access reliable mainframe tape libraries. Because LibraryStation software uses a subset of the ACSLS API (ACSAPI), many of the ACSLS-enabled software backup and storage applications can be utilized in the mainframe environment.

ACSLS Manager Software ACSLS Manager software enables tape library solutions to be shared in a heterogeneous environment, including AS/400, mainframe, UNIX, and NT platforms. The Automated Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS) Manager software functions as the central service provider for all library operations. It efficiently shares library resources with any ACSLS-enabled application on any system. Support for multiple drive and media combinations means you can easily match the library configuration to your backup requirements. ACSLS runs on Sun Solaris hardware, interfaces with 22 of the industry's leading backup and storage applications, and supports multiple operating system environments. ACSLS is the recognized industry leader, with over 4,000 customer deployments worldwide.

ACSLS Options
  • Sun StorageTek ACSLS High Availability Solution provides dual-server, fault-tolerant library management, eliminating single points of failure in the management of your tape libraries, maximizing business continuity and data protection.

  • Sun StorageTek Library Attach Software enables ACSLS-managed tape library solutions to be shared with a Microsoft Windows environment. Library Attach software works with ACSLS-enabled backup and storage applications. It uses a TCP/IP network to provide a seamless connection between Windows backup applications and ACSLS Manager software.

  • Sun StorageTek MVS Client System Component (MVS/CSC) Software allows MVS clients to share library access in an ACSLS- or mainframe-managed library environment.

  • Sun StorageTek RMLS Client System Component (RMLS/CSC) Software enables ACSLS managed environments and LibraryStation software to backup to these shared environments. It expands i-Series (AS/400) connectivity to the Sun StorageTek tape library product line.
