Features and BenefitsIs the Sun StorageTek Virtual Tape Library Plus (VTL Plus) better than other VTLs on the market? By far. An affordable midrange appliance, StorageTek VTL Plus 1.0 and the new StorageTek VTL Plus 2.0 lead in buffer capacity, configuration flexibility, and reliability. Sun Fire servers and the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) lock in data protection. Plus, Sun is the only vendor to offer full back-end physical tape integration.
ValueWhat is a virtual tape library?Essentially, it's a set of disks that sits between your backup server and your tape libraries. A virtual tape library saves time by accelerating backup data transfers. It then retains the backup data, keeping it available online for quick restores in the short term. Meanwhile, it schedules and automates the encryption and migration of backup data to your offline tape libraries. With the StorageTek VTL Plus, you can immediately reduce your backup windows, improve backup success rates, and accelerate data restores. Your choice of three disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) configurationsStorageTek VTL Plus offers the flexibility to support three possible disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) configurations (many VTL vendors are limited to a single mode of deployment). This flexibility is essential to meet the diverse needs of today’s enterprise. With StorageTek VTL Plus, you choose your preferred configuration of the various components. You can implement VTL to back up data to a disk-based virtual tape library (D2D), replacing the need for physical tape libraries. Or you may want to store backup data on physical tapes, choosing to complement your existing tape backup strategy with StorageTek VTL Plus. When used in this configuration, StorageTek VTL Plus dramatically accelerates backups and moves data to physical tapes as a background process that doesn’t impact production servers. Sun StorageTek VTL Plus also makes it easy to manage both virtual and physical tapes. Faster disk-to-disk backup and restoreStorageTek VTL Plus 2.0 occupies a single rack packed with 8-896 terabytes of raw disk capacity(VTL Plus 1.0 occupies a single rack packed with 8-224 terabytes of raw disk capacity), one or two Sun Fire servers, and software. Simply put, it's an extremely fast tape library emulator. To your existing backup and recovery applications, it appears as a mix of virtual tape drives, tape cartridges, and libraries. But because the connection is actually disk-to-disk, it transfers fewer, larger blocks of data, resulting in much faster backups and restores back to the network. And because most restores are required within 48 hours of a backup, you'll be ready with the data on disk. Choose the size and performance you needStorageTek VTL Plus is available in three versions. The high-performance disk arrays are optimized as virtual tape and specifically configured for sequential or streaming workloads. Highly redundant configurations are available as preconfigured systems. You can also add a range of software features. Software options for StorageTek VTL Plus 2.0 include the following choices:
Speed to burnNeed more speed? The three StorageTek VTL Plus configurations offer 800 MB/sec per VTL engine throughput. It's hard to imagine that your current backup window and restore goals couldn't benefit from that kind of throughput. What’s more, StorageTek VTL Plus utilizes the Solaris OS, which has won 21 world records for performance, and gives StorageTek VTL Plus a 30 percent performance advantage over Linux-based virtual tape libraries. Backup to tape on your own scheduleWhile StorageTek VTL Plus vastly improves the backup and recovery connection to your backup server, it also eliminates the time pressure associated with transfer to tape libraries for offline backup storage. The migration to tape takes place in the background and can be scheduled based on your priorities, allowing you to store and move data when you want, to where you want, based on your desired availability, speeds, cost per gigabyte, and the value of your data at each stage of its life. And here's a bonus: When a background backup to tape fails, as they sometimes do, it won't cost you a second of production time. AccessConsolidate your backup and recovery processStorageTek VTL Plus integrates seamlessly with multiple backup and recovery products and permits multiple backups to occur simultaneously. In open systems, this includes backup and recovery products such as Symantec/Veritas NetBackup, EMC/Legato Networker, IBM/Tivoli Storage Manager, and others. Mix and match your tape drives and tape librariesThe RAID-protected disk in the VTL Plus emulates these tape drives: LTO 1, LTO 2, LTO 3, DLT7000/8000, SDLT 220/320, Sun StorageTek 9840, Sun StorageTek 9940, Sun StorageTek T10000, IBM 3590 and can physically attach to these tape libraries: Sun StorageTek L-series, Sun StorageTek SL500, Sun StorageTek SL8500. SimplicityOptional SoftwareAvailable software for StorageTek VTL Plus can give you IP replication, compression, encryption, iSeries/AS400 support, and NDMP support. StorageTek VTL Plus presents itself to the operating environment as tape, so you can use your existing tape and backup procedures and protect your investment in backup software. Within your existing architecture, you can consolidate the management and provisioning of backup resources, share tape devices across multiple backup applications, and incrementally add new workloads without affecting tape configurations. Dual Sun StorageTek controllers for higher availabilityStorageTek VTL Plus 2.0 uses the Sun StorageTek verifydisk and verifylite controllers as well as SATA disk arrays to further boost performance, capacity, density, and availability. VTL Plus 1.0 uses both the Sun StorageTek 6140 disk controller and SATA disk arrays as well as the Sun StorageTek 6540 lite controller and SATA disk arrays to further boost performance, capacity, density, and availability.
Tape caching (physical library integration)The Tape Caching feature enhances backend tape support by implementing policy-based migrations from the StorageTek VTL Plus buffer to physical tape. Previous versions only migrated data manually, via explicit Export commands. With Tape Caching enabled, you set up policies based on criteria such as data age, buffer utilization (high water mark), and schedule to automate the process. And the Tape Shredding lets you actively delete data. TrustSecure tape (encryption)The Secure Tape feature encrypts data as it is migrated to physical tape. This means that data on tape is not exposed to inadvertent or malicious misuse. Secure tape everywhere is the rule. Strength in the Solaris OSWhile other vendors rely on less mature operating systems, StorageTek VTL Plus leverages the Solaris OS to deliver high availability and resource utilization, optimize performance, protect your data and cut expenses. What’s more, the Solaris OS is considered secure by U.S. Government agencies. If you're already a Solaris shop, StorageTek VTL Plus integrates into your environment and provides seamless data protection capabilities, including physical and virtual tape encryption. If you're currently on Linux, switching to the Solaris OS can boost your performance by up to 30 percent. The StorageTek brand of data protectionThere is no safer place on the planet to put your data than StorageTek. Since 1969, we have been obsessed with data protection and device reliability. Everything we design inherits everything we've learned. As a result, we consistently win high marks and awards in availability and performance, from blank tapes to drives to mega-libraries. Just as important, the Sun StorageTek VTL Plus provides you with our storage area networking software, expertise, backup and recovery integration services, and "one call" support. We won't leave you or your data exposed. |
