Sun StorageTek Pool Manager software enables organizations to pool heterogeneous storage resources and do fast provisioning based on application needs. The software vastly improves upon traditional capacity management by elevating the administrator's viewpoint from managing numerous individual LUNs to managing pools of storage, each with consistent attributes or services. To deal with escalating data retention needs, many organizations are looking at deploying multiple storage tiers. For example: tier 1 might be high performance 15K RPM FC drives; tier 2 could be bulk capacity 10K rpm FC drives; tier 3 could be archiving SATA drives, and so on. Storage Pools can be thought of as an extension of storage tiers by including specific configuration tuning parameters that tie a pool to desired workload characteristics. The result allows administrators to focus on the services their users and applications require, rather than disk array configuration parameters. In other words, they can spend less time configuring and managing capacity, and yield better results.
