Sun whips its Sun Ray thin client into better shape: Sun Ray 4

InfoWorld, Aug 10, 2006
The Sun Ray thin-client computing platform is actually a combination of hardware and software. At the hardware end, there are two new clients available. The modest Sun Ray 2 offers 10/100 Ethernet, sound, and USB support. The Sun Ray 2FS is larger but adds 100FX support for greater security at the transport level, as well as the ability to run dual monitors. Both clients are outfitted with SmartCard readers to support two-factor authentication.

Thin Clients: Take Two

Building on its new relationship with Microsoft, Sun has licensed Microsoft's RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol), a new feature that allows for direct connection to a Windows Terminal Server. This means the Sun Ray 2FS will allow IT managers to present a Windows, Sun Solaris or Linux desktop environment to end users, taking advantage of terminal services to virtualize a Windows session.

Extend the green approach to desktop technology

Robert L. Mitchell , IT World Canada, Feb 05, 2008
Many IT departments haven't yet looked at saving energy of the PC fleets across their companies' IT infrastructures, even if they have begun to make significant changes to how their data centres are powered and cooled. Verizon Wireless is one company that's saving plenty of green by going green. Verizon replaced 7,000 PCs in 10 call centres with power-sipping Sun Ray thin clients from Sun Microsystems Inc. and began a company-wide migration to LCD monitors. The managed thin clients use 30 per cent less energy than the nonmanaged PCs. He estimates that the power management and thin client initiatives combined have decreased the cost of front-office power consumption by US$900,000 annually.
