Desktop Virtualization

Virtual desktops allow you to replace traditional PCs with virtual machines that you can manage from the data center. With Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software, users can access virtual desktops from nearly any OS without the maintenance, upgrades, and operational costs of traditional PC architectures.

Server Virtualization

Sun's server virtualization technologies — Dynamic System Domains, Logical Domains, and Sun xVM Server — allow users to partition servers to run different types and versions of systems and SAP applications on a single server. This helps reduce the number of servers you need for production, testing, quality assurance, training, and upgrades. Solaris Containers provide advanced OS and application virtualization features across Sun's entire server line.

Sun and SAP fully support SAP applications running on Solaris Containers and Sun LDoms.

After an operating period of two years, we can confirm that virtualization goes hand in hand with consolidation. We need less physical hardware and less energy than before, and we continue to use an environment with a stable response and good performance.

Storage Virtualization

The open, ZFS file system pools together storage resources to manage storage as a single resource, so SAP applications can easily access storage when needed.. Energy-efficient tape virtualization solutions minimize the overall cost of protecting SAP data through improved tape utilization, shared tape resources, and reduced complexity.

Managing Virtualized Environments

Cross-platform virtualization management technology, Sun xVM Ops Center, provisions and manages pools of resources that users can share and allocate to many SAP instances. Resource management features enable applications to use resources from other applications, bringing server usage close to 85% of capacity.

Working With SAP

Sun is continuing to work with SAP to integrate and certify Sun's virtualization technologies Sun LDoms and Solaris Containers are currently supported with SAP software. Sun is also working to provide the ability to create, start, stop, and move SAP instances across pools of hardware with Sun xVM Ops Center.

Most recently, Sun helped form the SAP Enterprise Virtualization Alliance and Green IT Community. Sun continues its strong tradition of co-innovation through active participation within the SAP communities and through joint projects with SAP's Co-Innovation Lab to offer an efficient and flexible IT infrastructure for SAP environments.
