As an ISV, which Sun Program is right for me: Hosted StartUp Essentials or Solaris On Demand?

Discounted Partner Hosting available through Sun Startup Essentials is targeted at Startups. Unlike the Solaris On Demand program which is targeted at existing ISVs with an established on-premise business, and offers the ISV sandbox proof-of-concept for testing your existing application in a hosted environment. Do I have to be in the Sun Partner Advantage Program to take advantage of the Solaris On Demand Program?
A:
Yes. The Solaris On Demand Sandbox offering is available to Sun Partner Advantage Program participants at the Associate Partner level and above, that are Independent Software Vendors (ISVs).

Are there options for having Sun host my application directly, and deliver it through a SaaS offering, without going through a Sun Service Provider partner?
A:
Yes, there is an option for Sun to manage your application, while hosting from a partner datacenter. Please contact us and we'll explore which option might be best to meet your needs.

Does Sun have multiple Service Provider partners for me to select from?
A:
Yes. An overview is provided on each partner.
Q:
Can I have my solution running in a SaaS offering through multiple Service Providers in the US and/or in other geographies?
A:
Yes. Sun has established partner relationships across the geographies, providing you the greatest flexibility in determining your on demand strategy.

What if I try the sandbox for 90 days and don't like the results?
A:
There are no commitments to use the ISV sandbox. If, for any reason, you don't want to continue the relationship after the initial 90 days, you're free to exit.
Q:
What level of support can I expect from Sun and the Service Provider to assist me with porting and tuning?
A:
Porting and tuning services are provided from other programs at Sun, not through the Solaris On Demand program.
Q:
How much will I be charged from the Service Provider following the first 90 days?
A:
The 90 day ISV sandbox is free. Subsequent to that date, terms vary by Service Provider.
Q:
How can I ensure I stay close to the end user's and their needs if I'm working through a Service Provider?
A:
Typically, the ISV manages the relationship with your customers. Meanwhile, the service provider manages the infrastructure on your behalf. Therefore, you retain full access to your customers to insure their needs are being met.
Q:
What is Sun's exit-expenses for ISVs that want to stop their SaaS relationship, i.e. what will it cost me to walk away from SaaS with a specific Service Provider?
A:
If you decide to host your application with a specific Service Provider, then a contract will be signed between the Service Provider and your company. Typically, there are term commitments in the contracts with penalties for early cancellation. However, details will be negotiated with the Service Provider.

What type of go-to-market offerings will Sun provide to create awareness to prospects and customers that my solutions are now available through Solaris On Demand?
A:
At a minimum, you can have a Web page dedicated to your offerings on the sun.com Solaris On Demand Web page. There are additional opportunities for you and Sun to create a customer go-to-market program.

Do I still maintain a direct ISV partner relationship with Sun, regardless of my SaaS relationship with a Service Provider?

Q:
What are Sun's criteria for becoming a hosting service provider for the Solaris On Demand program?
A:
At some point, a Service Provider will need to be able to manage and support the Solaris operating system and Sun servers. If a Service Provider doesn't currently have this skill-set, then Sun can assist you in building these skills.

Service Providers enrolled in the Solaris On Demand program will purchase equipment through your regular channels at normal discounts.

No. It's up to the Service Provider to negotiate the relationship with the ISV.

Absolutely.

The Service Provider will have specific contractual commitments to your ISV customers that you're expected to honor. The exit strategy with Sun is negotiated specifically with Sun.

What level of professional services will be available from Sun to assist during the sandbox trial period and throughout the SaaS relationship with a specific ISV?
A:
The Service Provider will receive assistance from Sun through the Sun sales force and other resources specific to the Service Provider's needs.

Does my company have to meet any Sun Competency training certification requirements to become an approved SaaS Service Provider?

What contract protection can Sun provide in regards to the terms and conditions set between Service Providers and ISVs?

How will Sun control the number of Service Providers eligible to provide hosted services through the Solaris On Demand Program, i.e. will my company have exclusive rights to a sales territory or specific industry relationship?

There will be no exclusivity for Service Providers.

If I'm signed up as a SaaS Service Provider, does it affect my ability to resell Sun's software and hardware, if my company also has a reseller relationship with Sun?
