Custom Infrastructure

Sun Solaris OnDemand Program
Your On Demand needs are specific to your company. Sun can work with you to architect your On Demand infrastructure to meet your specific needs, built on proven components. For instance, deploy on AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon, and/or SPARC processor-based servers, depending on what's best for your application. Do you need a dedicated network for added security and/or a disaster recovery site for added reliability in the case of emergency? No problem. In addition, the entire infrastructure is managed with an uptime guarantee, so you don't need to worry. Of course, your infrastructure is hosted at an enterprise-class datacenter for added security and reliability.

Build Trust with Higher Security

With the Solaris On Demand program for ISVs, each customer runs its own instance of your software in their own set of secure Solaris Containers. You don't have to worry about maintaining security between customers because Solaris Containers does it for you. In fact, it's more secure than a multi-tenancy model where multiple customers might share the same database services or other services.

Not only are the containers isolated from each other — they're running one of the most secure operating systems in the world.

  • Enable strong mandatory access controls with Trusted Solaris Extensions
  • Verify integrity of files and system with BART and Solaris Secure Execution
  • Grant only necessary privileges for users and processes with User and Process Rights Management
  • Install secure by default network profile
  • Cryptographic services and encrypted communication with IP Filter firewall, TCP wrappers, and IPsec/IKE encryption

Lower Computing Costs

Solaris On Demand can also lower computing costs for you and your customers by increasing utilization. In traditional hosting services, each customer is assigned its own system and storage, which are often under utilized, so you pay for resources you don't use. With Solaris On Demand, the environment can be sized for exact needs and more resources can be dynamically added as demand increases. So you only pay for the resources you need.

Higher Reliability

Solaris On Demand can provide higher reliability than a multi-tenancy model where the application becomes a single point of failure that can affect all of your On Demand customers. With Solaris On Demand, faults in one container do not affect other containers. So even if you have to take down a container for one customer, this won't affect your other customers. And it's more cost effective than hosted single-tenancy, which requires you to dedicate servers to each customer bringing average utilization way down and your infrastructure costs way up.

The Solaris 10 OS is inherently more reliable than other platforms, with the ability to transparently stop problems in hardware and software before they happen.

  • Solaris Predictive Self Healing enables the system to heal itself, automatically diagnosing, isolating, and recovering from hardware and application faults
  • Solaris Fault Manager, a component of Solaris Predictive Self Healing, automatically and silently detects hardware problems and takes faulty components off-line, without requiring applications to go off-line
  • Solaris Service Manager, a component of Solaris Predictive Self Healing, automatically restarts application services in dependency order

The Right System for the Right Job

Sun works with our hosting partners and you to make sure your On Demand applications run on the right systems for the right job, offering more choice than any other vendor — all running the Solaris 10 OS.

Storage

Reliable and scalable storage is a critical component for successful On Demand applications and services. The ability to quickly handle demand can mean the difference between success and failure. The right storage infrastructure can also help provide maximum value for your On Demand customers' data.

With Sun's complete portfolio of storage products, we can architect an overall data management strategy that balances cost, performance, access, security, and archiving, specifically designed for the needs of your On Demand applications.
