These simple rules will help you understand how Sun's Upgrade Advantage Program works.


Sun's Upgrade Advantage Program – Terms & Conditions

Sun Upgrade Advantage Program (UAP) is a trade-in program that provide financial trade-in allowance to customers that purchase new Sun equipment, and agree to return the used equipment to Sun.

UAP trade-in allowance may be applied for 1) upgrade from server to server, 2) upgrade from storage to storage, and 3) if a customer has a total of 10 points of servers and storage systems to trade in (see upgrade guide - enterprise upgrade program - for details), the points can be spread out over servers and/or storage without restriction.

UAP trade-in allowance may be applied to all ATO factory and partner configured systems and options.

  • Standalone x-options are not eligible for the system allowance codes.

  • Exceptions are for High End storage options that can not be factory configured that are reviewed on a case by case basis.

  • GEMs to manage compliance - including partner compliance with policy for configured option - and exceptions to these rules.

UAP trade-in allowance may be combined with the customer's standard discount. Note that total discount ceiling may apply.

UAP trade-in allowance codes cannot be applied to products in pricing category D (defined as non-discountable).

UAP trade-in allowance cannot be applied to the purchase of Sun reman and used products. Exception must be approved by the reman product managers.

UAP trade-in allowance can be applied to purchases realized in a country other than the one where products "to be upgraded" are currently installed, in accordance with local regulatory and policy requirements.

Upgrade Advantage Program allowances cannot be combined with Edu price listed products unless via local DMP.

To qualify for the UAP, the following conditions must be met:

  • Original Sun Equipment must be purchased from Sun or Sun authorized reseller and partners. All users can take advantage of the UAP program. Special conditions apply if users do not own the equipment, or if owners are not the users of the equipment (lease,..)

  • Equipment to be traded-in must have been installed and in use for a minimum of 90 days prior to date of the order, and in good working condition when returned.

  • Detailed system configuration to be traded-in must be stated in the quote (under return requirements). The ALW Part number (Trade-In) must be part of the original order of the end customer.

  • Customers are required to return the exact system and components as specified on the quote (memory, drives etc)

  • Standard return policy is to have returned equipment made available for pickup within ninety (90) days. For complex transitions, one time extension (up to 90 additional days) can be granted. Special conditions may apply for "to be returned" systems less than 2 years old.

  • User must remove all proprietary and confidential data from returned equipment. All associated items such as cables, and power cords should be packed with the return equipment.

  • Certificates of destruction are available upon request for storage components (drives and disks)

  • Certificate of non use for systems are available upon request for circumstances when the end user can not return trade-in equipment. The eligibility is based on the age and type of equipment and must be approved by Sun's Area Controller/Finance Manager.

    Trade-In Returns - Certificate of Non Use
    • High-End Systems - minimum 7 years old
    • Mid-Range - minimum 6 years old
    • Volume Products - minimum 4 years old

  • Returns are final. Once products have been returned to Sun, they cannot be sent back to the customers.

If the Upgrade Allowance Program requirements are not met, Sun will send an invoice for the amount of the upgrade allowance.

UAP and its associated offerings may not be available in all countries. Sun reserves the right to change or modify the Upgrade Advantage Program, or other upgrade programs offered by Sun, at any time.

Full trade-in credit (allowance) is intended for the benefit of the end user and should be passed through to the end user. If you are a reseller, you must make sure that your end user customer meets the program requirements. Special conditions may apply for equipment purchased through Sun Microsystems Global Financial Services (SMGFS).

UAP may be combined with leasing deals. Allowance codes may be applied in accordance with specified programs and promotions. For more information on how to leverage the upgrade program with leasing please contact uap@sun.com or Financing_for_TechRefresh@sun.com
