Sun Blade 8000 Modular System Installation, Administration, and Troubleshooting (VC-ES-4993)

This course covers the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of the Sun Blade 8000 Modular System. With the skills gained the student will be able to support and maintain this products hardware locally or remotely using the tools that are inherent in the product. The course will be delivered in a live virtual classroom (LVC) by a remote instructor with remote labs available for the student to practice their new skills.

Module 1 - Hardware and Software Architecture

  • Describe the structure of the chassis and its basic functionality
  • Name the system component types and their locations within the chassis
  • Describe the hardware and software function of each system module
  • Name the module sub-components
  • Trace the data paths through the server modules, midplane, and I/O modules
  • Trace the cooling paths through the system components
  • Describe the power layout of the blade system
  • Name and describe the function of the system indicators
  • Indicate which components are FRUs and which are CRUs
  • Describe the management network and its components
  • Describe the fault management mechanism and its components

Module 2 - Installation and Replacement of the Chassis and System Boards

  • Install or replace the system chassis
  • Install or replace the server modules and their sub-components
  • Install or replace the EMs and NEMs
  • Install or replace a CMM
  • Install or replace the power, cooling, and indicator components

Module 3 - Management Network and Fault Management

  • Configure the serial management ports
  • Configure the Ethernet management ports
  • Verify the CMM-to-server module links
  • Navigate between the CMM and the server modules
  • Perform a CMM fail over
  • Locate and access Chassis FMA eReports and other system log files
  • Configure Chassis FMA eReports and system log files for remote archiving

Module 4 - Basic Administration

  • Determine the current status of the system, server, and I/O modules
  • Configure and access an ExpressModule (EM) from the OS of a server module
  • Configure and access a Network Express Module (NEM) from the OS of a server module
  • Configure and access an on-board disk from a server module
  • Update the Solaris x86 OS of a server module
  • Update the Linux OS of a server module
  • Update the Microsoft Windows OS of a server module
  • Update the firmware of a server module
  • Update the firmware of an EM board
  • Update the firmware of a NEM board
  • Update the firmware of a CMM board

Module 5 - Troubleshooting

  • Identify the troubleshooting tools that can be used on the Sun Blade 8000 modular system
  • Isolate a Sun Blade 8000 modular system error using error messages
