CommunityOne 2009 Online: OpenSolaris Development with Dtrace (WPB-400)

This is a collection of 2 in-depth presentations at OpenSolaris and CommunityONE 2009. Discussions look at how to incorporate DTrace into C/C++ and Java technology development and a developers insider view of OpenSolaris. The DTrace session provides an overview of DTraces capabilities, as well as an advanced exploration of D program capabilities, and helpful techniques. The OpenSolaris session describes the internal structure of OpenSolaris, secure programming techniques and the test and putback processes. Each recorded session contains a full audio and two video tracks (of the presenter and slides). There is also a topical navigation side bar for quick reference to key subjects.

Course Content

Module 1: Development and Optimization with DTrace

Instructor: Michael Ernest, Inkling Research

Description: This Deep Dive course takes an intensive, hands-on approach to incorporating DTrace into a developers role. It begins with an overview of DTraces capabilities in the Solaris operating system (Solaris OS) environment and a discussion of how providers supply program state and context to interested observers through probes. A walk-through of script building, including an advanced exploration of D program capabilities and helpful techniques followed by some examples of incorporating DTrace into C and Java technology development, constitutes the major portion of the course. It concludes with a list of effective practices for minimizing the effect of DTrace on a running system and tuning DTrace consumers for best results. Demonstrations are a key aspect of all the elements of the course, and access to all prepared demos will be available to participants.

Module 2: Developing in the OpenSolaris Operating System

Instructors: Max Bruning, Christoph Schuba, Jim Walker, Christian Kelly, Dermot McCluskey, Barry Cheshire

Developing in OpenSolaris: This session takes developers inside OpenSolaris describing the internal structure of OpenSolaris, secure programming techniques and the test and putback processes. Join experienced OpenSolaris developers in a hands on approach to learning the OpenSolaris development environment.
