Optimizing Solaris Administration with DTrace (EXL-2211)

Mike Ernest
|
Overview: This four-day course explores the DTrace facility. The pace and complexity of information is intended for system administrators who consider themselves advanced or expert in Unix operating systems, in particular the Solaris operating system. The course first demonstrates the tasks and analytic power that DTrace provides. Students learn the structure of the DTrace facility, apply well-known DTrace providers and probes, and familiarize themselves with Solaris utilities that complement DTrace. Students use DTrace to examine system performance on several levels, including device driver loading, kernel operations and process behavior. Students will review changes Java Virtual Machine instrumentation over the last few releases, and investigate program code that runs through process-based interpreters such as JavaScript. Exercises in analysis and trouble-shooting are incorporated throughout. After a technical review of DTrace architecture, students learn how to account for DTrace overhead, size its capacity on a system, and contain the costs of probe effect. |

Optimizing and Developing Applications with DTrace (EXL-2210)

Mike Ernest
|
Overview: This four-day course provides a developer-oriented view into the Solaris DTrace facility. The pace and complexity is aimed at developers with a working knowledge of C/C++ and Java, as well as some familiarity with Web 2.0 technologies. The course first reviews DTrace capabilities, focussing on the interests of application developers. After a review of the D language, students learn to observe, profile and instrument programs in C/C++ and Java, and observe programs using JavaScript, PHP and Ruby. Students also learn to analyze transient failures in code with speculative tracing. After a review of DTrace's implementation on Solaris, students also learn how to compile DTrace code, document its stability, and write translators to separate private implementation details of a program from the DTrace consumer view. |

Web 2.0 Development Using Advanced JavaServer Faces with Ajax and Dojo (EXL-1150)

Bryan Basham
|
Overview:
Web application development is challenging for many reasons: limitations of the HTTP protocol, complexity of Web technologies (XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript), and the enormous choices of non-standard server-side Java/Web frameworks. This course presents advanced features of two technologies that allow you to code at a higher level of abstraction. JavaServer Faces (JSF) is an third-generation Java Web technology that provides a component-based GUI framework which is highly extensible. One advantage of this framework is the ability to use advanced component libraries, many of which are open source. Next you will be introduced to the Dojo JavaScript framework. This library provides low-level APIs to facilitate cross-browser compatibility as well as a robust GUI widget set.
