Definition
The Primary Category Navigation, comprised of links and text under a header bar.
Usage
D2 Category Navigation may have either one or two columns of content per Primary Section Header (the text in the header bar). It's also common to see 2 thin columns side-by-side, each with its own Primary Section Header. This component is most often similar to the D1-Primary Navigation 1 found on Gateway pages, however a table format may also be used when items are similar enough for cross-category comparison (as in the Servers category page).
Primary Links are required in the D2 Category Navigation component, and these links are one size smaller than the ones in the D1 Gateway Navigation component. Along with the Primary Section Header and Primary Links, any combination of the following may be used:
- Child Links with a Tertiary Link ("See all")
- Body Copy (describing or sumarizing the Primary Link) with or without a Tertiary Link ("See all")
- Table Elements (when Child Links aren't as useful as a comparison table)
- A Primary Navigation Lead-In embedded inside the D2 component (use of this variation is discouraged, but it was necessary for the Software Category page due to the unique nature of Sun ONE)
As with the D1 Gateway Navigation component, behind any Child Links or descriptions there is a light gray background. When the Primary Link is alone, instead of the gray background containing child links etc., there a thin gray bar below the link (you may want to think of this as a collapsed gray background). The last item in the list of Primary Links doesn't need a gray bar underneath it, as the following component will have a separator of some sort incorporated into it.
A g14v6 Back to top Link component may be added to the bottom of the D2's leftmost table cell when needed.
v0
Primary Category Navigation
The standard version of the D2 Category Navigation Component is to be used on Catagory pages only.

Also for Catagory pages only, this variation is used when categories are similar enough to use cross-category comparison in a table format. Key attributes can be shown at a glance to help users make informed decisions as to which category to choose, and price may also be introduced since that is often a determining factor in selection. Categories should be stacked for easy scanning of the table.

v2
Primary Category Navigation w/description and child links
A primary navigation component that combines a description plus child links.
Only use this component when the links don't provide a good scent for what is in that category, and there are only a small number of categories (4 or fewer). When there are more categories, use the "description only" option. This component increases the complexity of the page and the user's task and should be used sparingly.

Benchmark Statement
The text would explain the overall value of these types of services - if possible it should give a concrete proof-point as the title. The link would go to a case study that best exemplifies these types of services. » Case Study
