Sun's Usage Guidelines for Ellipses
An ellipsis represents the omission of a word, phrase, line, paragraph, or more from quoted material. It is indicated by ellipsis points, a group of periods, or dots ("..."), that may be preceded or followed by other punctuation. Sun follows the three-or-four-dot method:
- Three dots indicate an omission within a quoted sentence, with spaces occurring before the first dot and after the final dot.
- Four dots are used to mark the omission of one or more sentences.
Ellipsis Points are typically not used:
- Before the first word of a quotation, even if the beginning of the sentence has been omitted; simply capitalize the first word.
- After the last word of a quotation, even if the end of the sentence has been omitted; just use a period.
For customer pull quotes, care must be taken that truncating a sentence does not alter the intent of the endorsement. Omitting complete sentences and using the four dot method is not advised for customer quotes. If you are unsure about the accuracy of an abbreviated customer quote, you should send it to the customer references team for approval.
For more information on the use of ellipses, please refer to Sun's Editorial Guidelines, The Mechanics of Writing.
