L01 Primary Content Banner

Definition

The Primary Content Banner puts promotional content front and center on a web page. This component is smaller than the Big Top Banner, but much more appropriate for lower level pages.

Usage

Use this banner to promote the following:

  • Products & Services
  • Downloads
  • Programs and Initiatives
  • Events
  • Special Offers

Position on Page

We use the Primary Content Banner format on navigation-class pages (e.g. gateway, category, subcategory). It must always appear at the top of a page, directly below the page title.

Production, Placements & Tracking

Do not create or reuse promotion banners for sun.com. To ensure consistent style, all promotion banner production for sun.com must be overseen by Corporate eMarketing. Additionally, the Corporate eMarketing team manages campaign strategy, placements and tracking of all promotional banners on sun.com. The team works with the various product, program and event teams to shape content and determine placements and frequency for banners.

Editorial Specifications

The majority of L1s are product-related, so wording should be clear and straight to the point. Space is very limited. The goal is to get readers to click and find out more; too much text puts readers off and lowers clickthroughs. Make sure the readers can quickly grasp the value of a click -- what will they get out of it?

L1 banners are also used for promotions. Again, the customer must be able to quickly understand the value of the offer -- not just a discount, but why should I care?

Headline

2-4 words long; uses Headline Style

Subhead

One line of bold text allowed (up to 25 characters; 6 words max). Bold text may be a sentence fragment or main call to action, and it may use branding wording.

Body Copy

Two lines of text preferred (up to 80 characters).

Call to action

Linking text ("More", "Start Saving Now") should be 1-3 words long and use Headline Style.

Graphic Specifications

Primary Content Banner imagery must comform to standards for brand photography [https://brand.sun.com/secure/idsystem/photography.html] and product photography.

Sun.com country websites should use the following resources when creating or adapting Primary Content banners:

Master templates for photographic element - see Graphic Library repository. Source files for existing banners (including html and image (psd) files) - see Banner repository

To assure proper style, ALWAYS start production using a master template file or a source file for existing sun.com banner. These files contain brand compliant design and typography specs - i.e. format, style, color, size, spacing and position. Do not make material changes to the design and type style represented in the master templates. Do not use animation unless reviewed and approved by banners@sun.com. If you have questions about format or style, please contact webdesign@sun.com.
